Monthly Reports ADJOURNMENT The Recreation and Parks Commission will adjourn this meeting to August 13, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recreation and Community Services Department Conference Room, 375 Campus RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2025 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Vice Chairperson Mediana called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Vice Chairperson Mediana ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Ayala, Cheung, Golsby, and Mediana EXCUSED: Vanni UNEXCUSED: Cheung A motion was made by Commissioner Ayala, seconded by Vice Chairperson Mediana, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Chairperson Vanni. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Ayala reported he sent an email to the City of Arcadia's Development Services Department to express his concerns regarding the proposed removal of the crosswalk to Bonita Park at Bonita Ave and Second Avenue. Commissioner Ayala expressed his biggest concern is the safety of park patrons who need to cross Second Ave to get to the facility. Director Recreation Community Services Department (DRCSD) Sara Somogyi informed the Commissioners she would try and find out more information regarding the crosswalk. Commissioner Goldsby reported he drove by the Newcastle Park construction site to take a look at the recently planted Butterfly Garden. Commissioner Goldsby inquired if the Recreation and Community Services Department provided trips or information on transportation to the Hollywood Bowl. DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commission the Recreation and Community Services Department does not organize a trip, but Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger does send over small blocks of free tickets to some of the concerts to hand out to seniors who visit the Community Center. DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commission the Hollywood Bowl offers shuttle service from various locations including the Arcadia County Park parking lot at the corner of Santa Anita Ave and Huntington Drive. Schedule and pricing can be found online. Vice Chairperson Mediana thanked DRCSD Somogyi and Deputy Director Public Works Services Department (DDPWSD) Carmen Masud for the prompt response and repair to the water leak at Tierra Verde Park. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON No Report CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 14, 2025. It was moved by Vice Chairperson Mediana, seconded by Commissioner Ayala, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a. 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department I. Project Updates DDPWSD Masud reported Newcastle Park renovations are progressing with the playground equipment, exercise equipment, drinking fountains, and bike racks being installed. The handball courts are being power washed, and trees are being planted. DDPWSD Masud reported the project is on schedule with completion expected in the fall. b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department Monthly Reports DRCSD Somogyi reported on several upcoming events and projects in lieu of the monthly numbers. DRCSD Somogyi reported the first batch of bricks from the Arcadia Parks Foundation for Newcastle Park were delivered to the Public Works Services Department. These bricks are part of a fundraising effort from the Arcadia Parks Foundation and will be installed as part of the park's decorative hardscape. DRCSD Somogyi reported the tennis courts at Tierra Verde Park will be resurfaced to include pickleball lines in mid -June. The courts will be closed from June 16 until the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 24 at 5 p.m. DRCSD Somogyi invited the Commissioners to the ceremony. DRCSD Somogyi reported Concerts and Movies in the Park begin on June 26 and handed out the concert/movie schedule. DRCSD Somogyi reported the youth summer camps have started and will continue through July. GregoryVanni Sara Somogyi Chairperson Secretary CITY OF ARCAMA STAFF REPORT DATE: July 9, 2025 TO: Honorable Chairperson and Members of the Recreation and Parks Commission FROM: Sara Somogyi, Director of Recreation and Community Services % SUBJECT: PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES -June 2025 SENIOR SERVICES DIVISION Arcadia Senior Services plays an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthyand independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Three pool tables are available Monday through Friday Room from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for seniors to enjoy 229 themselves and make new friends. Blood Free blood pressure checks are available the second Pressure Tuesday of each month, from 10-11 a.m. in the 5 Check Communi Center. Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10a.m.-1 p.m. Bridge and Fridays from 1-4 p.m. Card games can help 191 improve memory and cognition. It also enhances motor skills and promotes socialization. Exercise plays a vital role in a senior's health and Classes contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. Some classes offered 1,728 are line dance, cardio plus, Zumba, and more. Coffee with the Mayor is held on the third Tuesday of Coffee with the month, where seniors can stop by to listen and chat the Mayor with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal 39 interest. On Thursdays, Fit & Talk meets for a fun and easy 30- Fit & Talk minute workout. Each week there are different workouts available such as Line Dance, Zumba, Seated 46 Yoga, and Senior Olympics. The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique Gift Shop items made by senior crafters for a great price. The Gift Shoppers 145 Shop is located at the Community Center and open to Revenue $429 the public. The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists Information & Referral seniors with issues that affect their quality of life by Intakes Providing I&R referrals that address their living 108 concerns. Karaoke is available on the first and third Tuesday of Karaoke each month. Karaoke is a popular program where 73 senior participants enjoy singing to their favorite tunes in many languages. Legal The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Assistance Organization is available once a month at the 3 Community Center to provide seniors with legal insight. The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. The program offers low-income Lions Sight seniors free vision care. Prospective clients are 1 screened to make the necessary arrangements for the free service. Mahjong is a popular game of Chinese origin played by Mahjong four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. Participants are 107 welcome every Friday from 12:30-4 p.m. Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. This program provides a good Monday atmosphere for participants to show off their dance Dance skills and to meet new dancers. A live band plays a 323 variety of popular music to dance to. The cost is $3 at the door and includes refreshments. Monthly Dial -A -Ride bus passes are sold at the Community Bus Pass Center and can also be mailed to seniors. Bus passes 20 are $5 per month. Pinochle meets every Monday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Pinochle Pinochle is a trick taking ace ten card game of German origin usually played by two to four people with a 48- 24 card deck. Lunch meals are provided Monday -Friday. The cost is Senior $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for Meals individuals who are 50-54 years of age. Lunch is served Meals 1,245 Program promptly at 11:30 a.m. with the option to reserve a Average Meals 59 meal ticket online. Free seminars are available every month on assorted Senior topics. The following topics were presented in June: LA Seminars County Office of the Assessor; New Reverse Mortgage, Understandin{; Hernia Symptoms. Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays from 1-3 Sing Along p.m. in the lobby area. James plays his guitar and sings with James songs from different eras. Participants enjoy singing along for fun and socialization. _ Table Tennis is available for seniors to play and make Table Tennis new friends. Table Tennis is open Monday -Friday, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., with equipment provided. Each month participants meet at a different restaurant Taste the to have lunch and socialize. This month lunch was held Town at Hodori BBQ restaurant in Arcadia featuring authentic Korean dishes. Tech Talk is provided for individuals who need assistance with their electronic devices. During the Tech Talk summer, a Volunteen will be presenting a new topic regarding technology. After the presentation, assistance will be provided to the seniors to help them utilize their devices better. Weekly A weekly movie is available for seniors to watch every Movie Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Movies shown this month: Rustin, The Half of it, Behind the Candelabra, Out, and Milk. This program provides a weekly phone call to You've Got a individuals who live alone, feel lonely, or need someone Friend to check in on them. New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed. _ Space Bunco was held on Friday, June 6, with 27 Space Bunco participants that played three rounds of six Bunco _fames. A light lunch and dessert were provided. On Thursday June 12, 16 seniors participated in the 50 plus Doubles Billiards 8-Ball Tournament. This Billiards tournament allowed participants to partner up and Tournament compete against other duos. Ray Botana and Joe Crawley came in first place, while Phil Espanto and George Wat came in second place. The winners received prizes, medals, and bragging rights. On Friday June 20, 138 seniors came to participate in Summer Luau the annual Summer Luau. Each guest was greeted with a fresh orchid lei, graciously donated by California 170 M 31 21 35 K 27 16 138 Specialty Farms. Participants enjoyed a Hawaiian lunch, raffle prizes, and interactive Polynesian entertainment. Support services include registering members for trips, Arcadia signing up new members, and managing the club's Meeting: 52 Travelers correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Passes Sold: 43 Club Community Center to discuss future trips and provide Passe Passengers: 62 a social gathering. Total: 157 Cumulative total for senior services 5,104 Connection Total number of monthly newsletters distributed this month. 1,300 RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services is listed below. PROGRAM _ DESCRIPTION The Adult basketball league has 28 teams each season. ATTENDANCE Adult The league takes place at the Dana Gym on Sundays Basketball from 8a.m. to 10p.m. The spring league started March 787 30, 2025, and will run through June 29, 2025. The Summer Co -Ed Youth Basketball League takes place Co -Ed from June 23 to August 9. There are two divisions, Div B 108 Youth Division B for grades fifth and sixth and Division C for Div C 103 Basketball grades third and fourth. This is an internal league with Total 602 four teams per division. Games are played on Saturdays, The Summer Fun'N Play Program provides children from ages 5-12 with weekly recreational activities in a group Summer environment. The program runs for eight weeks from BS 1,035 Fun'N Play June 9 through August 1. The children enjoy a variety of CG 1,046 games, crafts, and a weekly demonstration from outside Total 2,081 organizations. Weekly Specialty Camps are offered in the Summer from Specialty June 9 through August 1 at various facilities in the City. Camps June Specialty Camps offered art, tennis, soccer, and 850 several Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camps. Summer On Thursday, June 26, the Summer Concerts and Movies Concerts & in the Park series kicked off with a bang. Cold Duck Movies in entertained 889 fans with their popular song list and Concerts/Movies the Park upbeat attitude. The movie, Dog Man, had 327 people in 889/327 attendance. The Volunteen Program provides teens, ages 13-16, with Volunteen valuable volunteer experiences to help prepare them for 21 Volunteens Program college and future jobs. During the month of June, a total 348 hours of 348 hours were completed by 21 Volunteens. City -Wide On Wednesday, June 25, 42 people attended the City - Health Wide Health Education Series seminar on "Cataract Education Surgery; Different Lens Implants for Different Visual 42 Series Outcomes" presented by Dr. Christopher Yo, MD, Ophthalmology, Kaiser Irwindale Medical. Community Examples of classes offered at this location include Center exercise classes, karate, cooking, chess, table tennis, 1,178 Classes yoga, lip reading, painting, and line dancing. Dana Gym Examples of classes offered at this location include Classes exercise classes, youth basketball classes, pickleball, 312 volleyball, and badminton.
