HomeMy WebLinkAboutRP Minutes: 06/11/2025RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2025 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - Vice Chairperson Mediana called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Vice Chairperson Mediana ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Ayala, Goldsby, and Mediana EXCUSED: Vanni UNEXCUSED: Cheung A motion was made by Commissioner Ayala, seconded by Vice Chairperson Mediana, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Chairperson Vanni. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Ayala reported he sent an email to the City of Arcadia's Development Services Department to express his concerns regarding the proposed removal of the crosswalk to Bonita Park at Bonita Ave and Second Avenue. Commissioner Ayala expressed his biggest concern is the safety of park patrons who need to cross Second Ave to get to the facility. Director Recreation Community Services Department (DRCSD) Sara Somogyi informed the Commissioners she would try and find out more information regarding the crosswalk. Commissioner Goldsby reported he drove by the Newcastle Park construction site to take a look at the recently planted Butterfly Garden. Commissioner Goldsby inquired if the Recreation and Community Services Department provided trips or information on transportation to the Hollywood Bowl. DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commission the Recreation and Community Services Department does not organize a trip, but Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger does send over small blocks of free tickets to some of the concerts to hand out to seniors who visit the Community Center. DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commission the Hollywood Bowl offers shuttle service from various locations including the Arcadia County Park parking lot at the corner of Santa Anita Ave and Huntington Drive. Schedule and pricing can be found online. Vice Chairperson Mediana thanked DRCSD Somogyi and Deputy Director Public Works Services Department (DDPWSD) Carmen Masud for the prompt response and repair to the water leak at Tierra Verde Park. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON No Report CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 14, 2025. It was moved by Vice Chairperson Mediana, seconded by Commissioner Ayala, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2a. 2. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department I. Project Updates DDPWSD Masud reported Newcastle Park renovations are progressing with the playground equipment, exercise equipment, drinking fountains, and bike racks being installed. The handball courts are being power washed, and trees are being planted. DDPWSD Masud reported the project is on schedule with completion expected in the fall. b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department I. Monthly Reports DRCSD Somogyi reported on several upcoming events and projects in lieu of the monthly numbers. DRCSD Somogyi reported the first batch of bricks from the Arcadia Parks Foundation for Newcastle Park were delivered to the Public Works Services Department. These bricks are part of a fundraising effort from the Arcadia Parks Foundation and will be installed as part of the park's decorative hardscape. DRCSD Somogyi reported the tennis courts at Tierra Verde Park will be resurfaced to include pickleball lines in mid June. The courts will be closed from June 16 until the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 24 at 5 p.m. DRCSD Somogyi invited the Commissioners to the ceremony. DRCSD Somogyi reported Concerts and Movies in the Park begin on June 26 and handed out the concert/movie schedule. DRCSD Somogyi reported the youth summer camps have started and will continue through July. ADJOURNMENT Vice Chairperson Mediana adjourned the meeting at 6:33 p.m. to July 9, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Recreation and Community Services Department Conference Room, at 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
