PUBLIC COMMENTS (5-minute time limit per person) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON 2. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES May 1, 2025 CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Bolster called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Bolster ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Robert Bolster, Shirley Curley, Joyce Platt, Cynthia Salazar, and Steve Sherman EXCUSED: Chris Arzate, Ethel Laczko, and Margaret Swope A motion was made by Chairperson Bolster seconded by Commissioner Sherman and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Arzate, Laczko, and Swope. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Sherman reported that the Men’s Club members are doing great and continue to meet every week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center to play pinochle. Chairperson Bolster handed everyone a memo he typed up regarding Wilderness Park. The memo indicates he is an advocate for Wilderness Park. Chairperson Bolster believes Wilderness Park is an invaluable asset to the City of Arcadia and to the community. Chairperson Bolster asked Council Member Cao if there was an update. Council Member Cao responded there is no update. Council Member Cao reiterated that the opening of Wilderness Park involves City, County, and Federal which will take a long time. The focus and priority at this time for the County and Federal agencies is to assist those who were affected by the Altadena fires in January 2025. Commissioner Curley reported the Assistance League celebrated its 70th birthday this year. Commissioner Curley handed out a memo that includes a brief history of the Assistance League Arcadia and the statistics for this year. The Assistance League has 120 chapters nationwide and has many programs available which include Operation School Bell, Day of Service, Assisteens, Las Alas, The Bargain Box Thrift Shop, and more. Commissioner Curley was saddened to report that the Friendship Club is no longer meeting as the club has dissolved. Commissioner Swope was the representative for the Friendship Club and will no longer be attending the Senior Commission meetings. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported the Travelers Club is in the process of nominating the committee. In the month of May the Travelers Club nominates new members, in June they will vote, and new nominees begin their new assignments in January 2026. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported the guest speaker for May’s meeting is Kathy Symons. Kathy is a professor at Rio Hondo College and world traveler. Kathy has visited over 160 countries and only has approximately 40 countries left to visit. Vice-Chairperson Platt reported on upcoming trips. On July 16, participants will visit the Cosm, a state-of-the-art immersive dome venue that includes a private guided tour. On July 18, participants will have a private tour of the USS Iowa, a battleship that served in WWII, Korean War, and the Cold War. On August 6, participants will experience the elegance and richness of France at Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market, Bistro, and Seafood Market. On August 21, participants will spend the day in Santa Barbara which includes lunch at Padaro Beach Grill followed by a fun ride on the Land Shark vehicle, which travels on land and on water. Commissioner Salazar reported the Golden Senior Club is doing great and some of the Friendship Club members have joined the club. Commissioner Salazar reported a staff from the Police Department will be the guest speaker in May. Commissioner Salazar reported there will be a Mother’s Day celebration on May 15. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Dr. Michael Cao was happy to report the Santa Anita Park has been confirmed as the equestrian venue for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The Santa Anita Park hosted the equestrian events during the 1984 Olympic games. Council Member Cao mentioned if anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer at the Olympic Games, one will have to apply through the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG). 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of March 6, 2025. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Commissioner Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Platt, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Bolster, Curley, Platt, Salazar, and Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: Arzate, Laczko, and Swope ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) Recreation Supervisor (RS) Annie Sumioka reported on the events and programs that took place during the month of April. On April 11, an orange themed Bunco event was held with 25 participants. Bunco includes a light lunch, three rounds of Bunco, dessert, and raffle prizes. On April 18, the annual Spring Fling event was held with a Royal Ball theme. Participants were dressed in their best attire. The event included lunch, live music, games, raffle prizes, and an award for the “Belle of the Ball” contest. Fit and Talk is going great. The program is offered every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. for a 30-minute workout with a new workout each week. Taste the Town is a popular program where seniors meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia each month. In April they met at Dings Garden featuring authentic Chinese food. RS Sumioka reported on upcoming events and programs in May. On May 2, senior participants will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with food catered from a Mexican restaurant, dessert, music, entertainment, and raffle prizes. On May 9, the Arcadia Community Center is hosting the annual 50+ Resource Fair. The event will provide resources and referral booths providing information on essential services, legal services, transportation, education, housing, and much more. Lastly, RS Sumioka was happy to report that a new Recreation Coordinator has filled the vacant position at the Community Center. The new Recreation Coordinator, Marisol Martinez, will be overseeing senior seminars, Monday Dance, Information & Referral Program, Senior Lunch Program, and many more programs and events. Marisol was previously a Recreation Leader II and was promoted in April 2025. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported the Resource Fair on May 9, will be different this year and it will not include health information. A Citywide Health Fair will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025. DDRCS Cheung reported Law Day will be free on Saturday, May 17. Registration is required and participants will be able to meet with an attorney free of charge for 20- minutes. DDRCS Cheung reported the Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park start Thursday, June 26 through July 31, 2025. DDRCS Cheung reported National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 in partnership with the Arcadia Police Department. There will be plenty of activities, a live band, and much more. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room There are three pool tables available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors to play. The Billiard Room is undergoing renovations July 22- July 31. 141 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure check is available the second Tuesday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 9 Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Card games can help improve memory and cognition. 133 Classes Exercise plays a vital role in a seniors health and contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. Some classes offered are line dance, cardio, Zumba, and more. 2,508 Coffee with the Mayor Coffee with the Mayor is held the third Tuesday of the month, where seniors can listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 35 Fit & Talk Fit & Talk meets every Thursdays for and easy 30- minute workout. There are different workouts each week such as Line Dance, Zumba, Yoga, and more. 42 Gift Shop The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand crafts, and unique items made by senior crafters. It is located at the Community Center. Shoppers: 159 Revenue: $579.36 Information & Referral Intakes The Information & Referral (I&R) program assists seniors with providing I&R referrals that address issues or living concerns. 45 Karaoke Karaoke meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. It is a popular program where seniors can sing their favorite songs in many languages. 84 Legal Assistance The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization is available once a month to provide seniors with legal insight. 4 Mahjong Mahjong is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. Mahjong meets every Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 80 Monday Dance Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. Seniors are able to show off their dance skills and to meet new dancers. Live bands play a variety of music to dance to. 217 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month. Bus Passes can also be mailed to customers. 46 Pinochle Pinochle meets every Monday at 9:00 a.m. Pinochle is a card game of German origin played by two to four people with a 48-card deck. 24 Senior Meals Program Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost is $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for individuals who are 50-54 years of age. Meals: 1,144 Average Meals: 55 Senior Seminars Free seminars are available every month on different topics. The topic in July was: Learning Effective Self Defense. 34 Sing Along with James Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays his guitar and has participants sing along with him. 204 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with equipment provided. 2,010 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch and socialize. On July 17, participants had lunch at Xi’An Foodie Restaurant featuring northern Chinese food. 22 Tech Talk A volunteen presents on different technology topics each month. Assistance is provided after each presentation for those who need help with their device. The topic on July 11 was Recognizing Scams. 27 Weekly Movie A weekly movie is available to watch every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Movies shown this month: The Six Triple Eight, Murder Mystery, Burn-E, Suzume, National Treasure, and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. 45 You’ve Got a Friend This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who live alone or need someone to check in on them. New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed. 2 Patriotic Picnic On Wednesday, July 3, the Patriotic Picnic for seniors was held. Seniors enjoyed games, raffle prizes, lunch, and dessert. 66 Circus Bingo On July 18, participants enjoyed Bingo with a Circus theme. The program includes eight games of bingo, a light lunch, and a raffle. 78 Afternoon at the Movies On July 25, participants attended an afternoon program to learn all about the making of the popular 1985 sci-fi movie Back to the Future. Guest speaker, Theo Siegel, discussed the making of the film and its entirety. 13 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and managing the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss future trips and provide a social gathering.
