RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING
CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Vanni called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Commissioner Goldsby
ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS
PRESENT: Ayala, Cheung, Goldsby, Mediana, and Vanni
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Commissioner Cheung made a motion to nominate Vice Chairperson Mediana as
Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Ayala and unanimously carried on roll call vote.
Commissioner Cheung made a motion to nominate Commissioner Ayala as Vice -
Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Vanni and unanimously carried on roll call vote.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS
1. PUBLIC COMMENTS
REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS
Chairperson Mediana reported the new Pickleball courts at Tierra Verde Park are being well
utilized. Chairperson Mediana reported it is nice to see the community utilizing the park
more. Chairperson Median reported his family has been enjoying the Summer Concerts and
Movies in the Park.
Vice Chairperson Ayala reported he attended Concerts and Movies in the Park with his family
and enjoyed the evening. Vice Chairperson Ayala is looking forward to seeing the newly
overlaid pickleball lines added to the Tierra Verde Park courts. Vice Chairperson Ayala
inquired if there will be specific times for pickleball usage. Director Recreation Community
Services Department (DRCSD) Sara Somogyi informed the Commission the courts will remain
on a first come, first serve basis while usage is assessed. Vice Chairperson Ayala thanked
DRCSD Somogyi for taking action regarding the possible removal of the crosswalk at Second
Ave and Bonita. Vice Chairperson Ayala reported the crosswalk will be replaced once the
repaving of the street is complete.
Commissioner Cheung reported the Pickleball courts at Tierra Verde Park look great.
Commissioner Cheung thanked DRCSD Somogyi and staff for all their hard work and the
programs provided for the community.
Commissioner Goldsby reported he attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Tierra Verde
Park on June 24. Commissioner Goldsby reported he missed the Patriotic Festival Drone
Show on June 28 but looks forward to catching future shows.
Commissioner Vanni reported the bears are active in the Arcadia foothills and experienced
one on his property.
REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON
Mayor Kwan thanked the Commissioners for all of the work and insight they provide to the
community. Mayor Kwan reported the Patriotic Festival held on June 28 was a magnificent
event with extraordinary attendance from the Arcadia Community and many of the
surrounding communities. The infectious sense of unity and festive atmosphere made for a
memorable event for all who attended. Mayor Kwan reported she attended the Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony at Tierra Verde Park on June 24. Mayor Kwan reported she received a
letter from tennis players who utilize the Tierra Verde Courts inquiring about possible
designated court usage time for tennis players and designated court usage for pickleball
players and will provide the information to DRCSD Somogyi for review and consideration.
Mayor Kwan stated she is honored to be a part of the Recreation and Parks Commission, a
commission that does so much for the community.
CONSENT CALENDAR
a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 14, 2025.
It was moved by Commissioner Goldsby, seconded by Vice Chairperson Ayala, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2.a. with two
corrections, the spelling of Commissioner Goldsby's name and the removal of the
duplicated name of Commissioner Cheung in the roll call of the Commissioners.
2. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report from Public Works Services Department
Project Updates
Deputy Director Public Works Services Department (DDPWSD) Carmen Masud reported
residents can purchase bear resistant trash carts through the Public Works Services
Department. DDPWSD Masud reported Newcastle Park renovations are moving along and
the project is on schedule with completion expected in fall.
b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department
I. Monthly Reports
DRCSD Somogyi welcomed Council Liaison Mayor Kwan to the meeting.
DRCSD Somogyi reported summer programs are underway with the youth Summer Fun 'N
Play program being held at two Arcadia Unified School District sites with over 2,000 children
participating. DRCSD reported one site offers extended care to accommodate working
parents. DRCSD Somogyi reported the youth Sports Camp will run the last four weeks of the
summer Programming July 14 through August 8. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Concerts and
Movies in the Park series began on Thursday, June 26, with 889 people enjoying the concert
and 327 people watching the movie. DRCSD Somogyi reported National Night Out and the
City of Arcadia's Birthday celebration will take place together on Tuesday, August 5.
DRCSD Somogyi reported on several senior activities during the month of June, starting with
Coffee with the Mayor which had 39 participants attend. DRCSD Somogyi reported Fit & Talk
had 46 participants. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Gift Shop had 145 visitors. DRCSD Somogyi
reported Karaoke had 73 participants. DRCSD Somogyi reported 107 players participated in
Mahjong. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Monday Dance continues to be popular with 323 in
attendance. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Senio Meals Program served 1,245 meals. DRCSD
Somogyi reported 80 participants attended the senior seminars on "The New Reverse
Mortgage and Understanding Hernia Symptoms." DRCSD Somogyi reported Sing Along with
James had 170 participants. DRCSD Somogyi reported the first Doubles Billiards 8-Ball
Tournament took place with 16 competitors and the winner took home a medal, a prize, and
bragging rights. DRCSD Somogyi reported 138 seniors attended the Summer Luau event and
received fresh orchid leis donated by California Specialty Farms.
DRCSD Somogyi reported on several recreation programs and activities during the month of
June. DRCSD Somogyi reported the Adult Basketball league had 787 participants. DRCSD
Somogyi reported Specialty Camps, which include both educational and outdoor
recreational activities, had 850 children in attendance. DRCSD Somogyi reported the
Volunteen Program had 21 volunteens providing 348 hours of service. DRCSD Somogyi
reported the City -Wide Health Education Series had 42 attendees for the Seminar on
"Cataract Surgery: Different Lens Implants for Different Visual Outcomes" presented by Dr.
Christopher Yo, MD, Ophthalmology, Kaiser Irwindale Medical. DRCSD Somogyi reported
Community Center facility rentals continue to increase with 2,310 people utilizing the facility
in the month of June.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Mediana adjourned the meeting at 6:48 p.m. to August 13, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the
Recreation and Community Services Department Conference Room, at 375 Campus Drive,
Arcadia.
