The Museum opened its new exhibition on Camp Santa Anita on August 9. This year’s Dino Day on August 23 has more vendors participating, including the Alf Museum, Pasadena Audubon Society, and Dino Party. COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on digitizing items from the Museum’s Collection, specifically the Arcadia Historical Society Collection. Ms. Cordano also assisted staff in contacting participants of this year's photography contest to pick up their photographs from the Museum since it ended on July 19. Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski and volunteer Mr. Andrew Bermudez continue to work on the Arcadia Woman’s Club and Floretta K. Lauber collections, adding additional photographs and information to the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. Volunteer Mr. Robert Levia continues to help staff at the front desk every Tuesday afternoon. He’s been helping staff with educational kits for outreach programs as well as organizing the front desk. Mr. Levia has also been actively helping prepare with Dino Day and Make Your Own Snow Globe events. Volunteer Ms. Wendy Xiang continues to help the Museum staff on the weekends with different projects. Ms. Xiang is responsible for helping the Museum transcribe its flyers to simplified Chinese to accommodate the Arcadia Community. She currently is working on the translation of all exhibit panels to be accessible to guests on their phones. City Intern Ms. Nicole Kreuzer has been working on several projects at the Museum with Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo. She has worked on the creation and installation of exhibits. She has also been conducting a lot of research for these exhibits. Getty Intern Ms. Melia Valentine’s primary project this summer was to create and construct the temporary exhibit for Camp Santa Anita. Now that the exhibit is complete, she has been working with Curator Acevedo on exhibit updates. She is currently working on cataloging, digitizing, and curating artifacts found in the Museum's oversized filing cabinet. Items include panoramas, newspapers, and artwork. Curator Acevedo also has taken time to teach Getty interns Valentine and Ms. Priscilla Gardina museum skills, such as how to construct custom boxes for artifacts. 2 Curator Acevedo is collaborating with Librarian Ms. Cheryl Tarsala from Dana Middle School to digitize yearbooks from the school from 1955 to the present. Intern Valentine completed this project in July. She digitized the yearbooks in JPEG, TIFF, and searchable PDF formats. Ms. Tarsala is very appreciative of the Museums’ help with this since it has never been done before. She will be picking up the yearbooks in September. An inventory of all items donated during this time period:  Mr. Dale Carter, on behalf of his wife Ms. Miriam Carter, donated three PTA Santa Anita Elementary School scrapbooks from 1975-76.  Ms. Ili Lobaco, on behalf of the Monrovia Historical Museum, donated 33 photographs that were taken by Mr. Milton Bell, a News Post Photographer. These photographs highlight photographs he would have taken for the newspaper, which included the City of Arcadia police and fire departments.  Mr. Steve Gewecke donated two cookbooks, including one from the Assistance League of Arcadia and the other from Longley Way Elementary Room 11 in 1972. He also donated a Creative Writing book for Arcadia Elementary Schools in 1974. EXHIBITS The 15th Annual Photography Contest exhibit closed on July 19. The community really engaged with the exhibit, especially with it on display at the same time as Baldwin Stocker Elementary school’s 3D diorama of the City of Arcadia. Third grade teachers Ms. Evelyn Lim and Ms. Riley Carius from Baldwin Stocker picked up the diorama on July 22. Curator Acevedo and Interns Valentine and Kreuzer worked on the installation of the new Veterans display case. The Public Works department helped with the construction of the exhibit case. Staff decided to highlight four Veterans, including past Mayor Ms. Mary Young, Dr. Richard Cordano, Mr. Alvin Bippert, and Mr. Roscoe Easton. This case was generously funded by the Friends of the Arcadia Museum. The exhibit was completed on July 11 for the community to begin to enjoy. Staff worked on the installation of the Camp Santa Anita temporary exhibit during the last week of July for the opening on August 9. The exhibit highlights not only the history of Camp Santa Anita Ordinance Training Facility during World War II, but the personal stories of the soldiers and civilian employees. Getty Intern Valentine also worked on making the exhibit accessible to community members by providing a translation in mandarin of the exhibit panels. The exhibit will be on display until January 2026. In connection with the large temporary exhibit at the Museum, Curator Acevedo and Getty Interns Valentine and Gardina updated the exhibit at City Hall near the cashier’s office. An introduction of the exhibit as well as some artifacts were put on display. Visitors are encouraged to visit the Museum to see the full exhibit. 3 Curator Acevedo and City Intern Kreuzer worked with Library Manager Ms. Petra Morris and Librarian Ms. Yvonne Ng in creating an exhibit at the Library near the Children’s section. The exhibit highlights firefighter Mr. Jerry Broadwell who lost his life 50 years ago while on duty. The exhibit highlights things about Mr. Broadwell’s life and his dedication to the Arcadia community. The exhibit also highlights a Create Your Own Firefighter kit that is available upon request at the Children’s desk. Interns Kreuzer and Valentine worked with Curator Acevedo in conducting the yearly cleaning of the wax figures in the Museum, including Lucky Baldwin and Anita Baldwin. Staff also worked on adding additional panels to the Anita Baldwin exhibit explaining the windows on display as well as the new light fixture installed earlier this year. Curator Acevedo and staff member Ms. Rebecca Andersen are working with Mr. Steven Geweke and Mr. Tim Pawley on an Arcadia Little League temporary exhibit. Personal items from both Geweke and Pawley will be included in the exhibit, highlighting the history of Arcadia Little League over the years. Ms. Kreuzer has also been doing research and collecting information on the founder Mr. Babe Dahlgren. This exhibition will be showcased in the Museum’s lobby as well as the Council Chambers at City Hall. ADMINISTRATION The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) met on July 3 but cancelled their meeting in August. The Board discussed doing the Vons Credit Union fundraiser on August 15. The next FAM meeting will take place on September 4. The Museum was awarded the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship grant to fund two paid internships: Curatorial & Exhibitions along with Education & Public Engagement. Interns will work 40 hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks. Ms. Melia Valentine, the Curatorial and Exhibitions Intern, and Ms. Priscilla Gardenia, the Education and Public Engagement Intern, have been very active with projects around the Museum. Their last day of their internship is August 23. Museum staff and interns have had the opportunity to visit and learn more about the local museums around the area. Staff went first to the Norton Simon Museum on July 11. On July 24, staff went to the Huntington Library and met with Dr. Kristin Brisbois McNutt from the Education Department. They were able to speak to her about her current position, her educational background, and give some advice to the interns who are emerging museum professionals. Staff also visited the Alhambra Historical Museum and met with Ms. Susan Saunders, where they saw their exhibits, collection space, and their new property known as the Story House, which was donated to their organization by an anonymous donor. Lastly, on August 14, staff visited the Monrovia Historical Museum for a tour with Ms. Ili Lobaco. She showed staff their current exhibit upgrades, their collection and workspaces for volunteers. Both the Alhambra Historical Museum and Monrovia Historical Museum are volunteer run. Staff are currently working on City website updates. Curator Acevedo has narrowed its pages down to About, Collections & Exhibits, Programs, Military Banner Program, and Research & Resources. The City will be launching a new website re-design in September. Staff submitted a proposal to present at the California Association of Museums annual conference in March of 2026. The conference will take place in Los Angeles at the Omni Hotel. The proposed session The Little Museum that Could: Tiny Team, Mighty Mission, will discuss how the small but mighty Gilb Museum staff is reframing what’s possible by bringing big ideas to life on a budget, with passion, a clear mission, and strong community spirit. Attendees will take away inspiration 4 for reframing challenges into opportunities, boosting attendance, expanding programs, and growing a dedicated volunteer team. Staff will be notified if it has been accepted by September. Curator Acevedo is also participating in the California Association of Museums Program Committee for the annual conference. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING Education Coordinator Ms. Lauren Porras, and Getty Intern Ms. Priscilla Gardina completed the Summer Enrichment Program with a total of 132 students across all the programs. There were 5 students who received a special certificate and a tote bag for attending and participating in all four programs. The Summer Enrichment Program had four separate programs with two sessions each week. The morning session was instructed by Ms. Porras, and the afternoon session was led by Ms. Gardina. The program topics included Time Traveling Artist, Tech It Out, Dino and Diversity, and Lyrical Languages. Attendees learned about a vast array of topics surrounding museums and history regarding Arcadia. The community was very appreciative of the engaging content and fun activities. Feedback was consistently positive from parents, students, and guardians. The Museum is currently collecting applications for participants in this year's Military Banner Program. The Military Banner Program was established by the City of Arcadia to honor and recognize living military personnel from Arcadia. Street banners honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces will be proudly displayed along Huntington Drive in the month of November. The deadline to apply is August 31. So far, the Museum has received three new applications. Museum Intern Nicole Kreuzer attended one of the City of Arcadia Summer Concerts and Movies in the Park on July 17 with the Library Staff. There were 50 kits handed out and was an opportunity to promote upcoming events and programs such as Summer Enrichment and Dino Day. The Museum also released its newest educational kit on August 9, Architecture in Arcadia, as part of our ongoing effort to engage families and young learners with local history through creative, hands-on experiences. Community members are encouraged to register for a kit online while supplies last. Museum staff will hold their annual Dino Day event on Saturday, August 23, and are expecting over 100 visitors to the Museum and Museum Education Center. The event will be organized into five stations. Activities include excavating fossils, painting a wooden dino, building a 3D T-Rex, crafting a velociraptor eye magnet, and decorating their very own dino themed gift bag. Dino Day will also welcome special guests and vendors such as the Alf Museum of Paleontology, The Pasadena Audubon Society, and a live performance from Dino Party. Staff and volunteers have been preparing materials, decorations, and supplies for this event throughout the summer. Education Coordinator Porras has conducted interviews for prospective Education and Public Engagement Interns for the Fall. They would assist in the Museum’s weekly Preschool Program and publicity. The candidate will be selected by the third week of August with a tentative start date by the first week of September. 5 VOLUNTEERS The Museum continued to have teen volunteers throughout the weekdays of July and August. There were four new teen volunteers added to the team. Ms. Porras will reopen volunteer enrollment in mid-September. On August 9, staff conducted Summer Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast for all volunteers for the summer. It’s important to acknowledge their hard work and dedication as it’s what allows the Museum to continuously serve the community. The morning consisted of team building and relay games, food, and special volunteer giveaways. There were 19 volunteers in attendance. Volunteers have been assisting with assembling activity supplies for Dino Day. Responsibilities included making excavation kits and pre-cutting materials for the event. Volunteers assisted with decorating by creating a Welcome to Dino Day Banner which will be used for the event as well.
