1. PUBLIC COMMENTS (5-minute time limit per person)
Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5)
minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act,
the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not
listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for
appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting.

August 7, 2025
CALL TO ORDER – Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung
called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

PRESENT: Alexander Arasawa, Cris Arzate, Shirley Curley, Ethel Laczko,
Marilyn Mazone, and Steve Sherman
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Commissioner Laczko made a motion to nominate Marilyn Mazone as Chairperson,
seconded by Commissioner Curley. Commissioner Mazone accepted the nomination, and the
motion was carried unanimously. Commissioner Laczko made a motion to nominate Steve
Sherman as Vice-Chairperson, seconded by Commissioner Mazone. Commissioner Sherman
accepted the nomination, and the motion was carried unanimously.

REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Laczko introduced herself as member at large. Commissioner Laczko thanked
Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) for the partnership of Pasadena City College (PCC),
for providing a free sewing class for seniors starting August 26, 2025, through December 9,
2025. Commissioner Laczko reported that PCC also offers free history, music, and art
appreciation classes. Commissioner Laczko suggested reviewing the mission statement for
senior services. Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung
(DDRCS) informed everyone that the mission statement Commissioner Laczko is referring to
was published and used many years ago, however, the department now refers and follows
the Department Guide. Commissioner Laczko suggested having a photo of the new Senior
Citizens Commission and publishing it in the Connection Newsletter and in the City’s Hot
Sheet for the public to get to know who the commission members are. Commissioner Laczko
suggested ordering shirts for each commissioner to wear during special events and also
proposed having each commissioner take turns to assist at special functions and events such
as Concerts in the Park. DDRCS Cheung thanked Commissioner Laczko for the suggestions
and will discuss them further with RS Sumioka.
Commissioner Arzate introduced himself as member at large and on his second year as a
Senior Commissioner. Commissioner Arzate reported his family has lived in Arcadia for four
years. Commissioner Arzate works for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles as
Community Affairs Director.
Vice-Chairperson Sherman introduced himself as the Senior Men’s Club representative in
Arcadia. Vice-Chairperson Sherman retired as a radiologist. Vice-Chairperson Sherman is
married, has three children, and enjoys traveling.
Commissioner Arasawa introduced himself as member at large. Commissioner Arasawa
works in IT for a healthcare organization. Commissioner Arasawa likes birds and volunteers
at a bird conservatory in San Pedro. Commissioner Arasawa attended Arcadia schools and
played the trumpet in his high school band.
Commissioner Curley introduced herself and will be representing the Assistance League of
Arcadia. The Golden Senior Club members meet at the Assistance League on Thursdays and
are currently looking for a club representative for the Senior Citizens Commission.
Chairperson Mazone introduced herself as the Arcadia Travelers representative.
Chairperson Mazone reported the Arcadia Travelers meet every third Thursday for their
regular meeting and on the fourth Friday for their general meeting. Chairperson Mazone
reported on the following day trips. On August 6, participants visited Monsieur Marcel to
enjoy lunch with a selection of French food. After lunch participants visited the Getty Center.
On August 28, 2025, participants will take a day trip to Santa Barbara which includes lunch
at Padaro Beach Grill followed by a tour on the popular land shark vehicle. On September
17, participants will be able to enjoy a tribute to the Carpenters. It includes a three-course
lunch at the Almansor Court in Alhambra.

2. CONSENT CALENDAR

Recommended Action: Approve
It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Curley, and
unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a.

3. REGULAR ITEMS
a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS)
Recreation Supervisor (RS) Annie Sumioka reported on the events and programs that
took place during the month of August. On July 3, 2025, participants attended the annual
patriotic picnic at the community center which included lunch, dessert, games, and raffle
prizes. On July 18, 2025, participants attended Bingo with a circus theme and included
eight games of bingo, a light lunch, and raffle prizes. Afternoon at the Movies is a new
program presented on July 25, 2025. Participants will learn all about the history and
making of popular movies. The movie topic in July was Back to the Future with guest
speaker Theo Siegel. The next Afternoon at the Movies will be on August 22, 2025. RS
Sumioka reported on upcoming programs and events. On August 8, 2025, Bunco will be
held with an 80s theme and will include lunch, dessert, and prizes. On August 8, 2025,
participants attended the annual Pageant of the Masters show at Laguna Beach. On
August 14, 2025, participants will spend the day at Picnic Beach in Laguna for the annual
beach trip which includes a morning pastry and coffee, lunch, snacks, board games, and
time for individuals to walk along the beach. Bingo will be held on August 29, 2025, with
an Around the World theme. Lastly a new sewing class will be available for seniors and will
be presented by Pasadena City College (PCC). PCC will be providing the materials and
sewing machines.
b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD)
DDRCS Cheung reported there will be a free seminar on L.A. Found on Monday, August
11, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. L.A. Found is a free County program that provides qualified
individuals with a trackable wristband to help keep loved ones safe. DDRCS Cheung
reported on the new Bring a Friend to Lunch program. Individuals who bring a new person
to the senior lunch program will both receive a free lunch. DDRCS reported Newcastle
Park located at 143 Colorado Boulevard will have a grand reopening ribbon cutting
ceremony on October 7, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. with giveaways and park tours. Newcastle
Park will have four new lighted pickleball courts. The Arcadia Parks Foundation is
assisting with the commemorative brick campaign where individuals can purchase a
personalized engraved brick to be installed at the park.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Mazone adjourned the meeting at 4:50 p.m. to Thursday, September 4,
2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.

Arcadia Senior Services plays an integral part in the wellness of the senior community. The
multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent
lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below.

There are three pool tables available Monday
through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for
seniors to play.

Blood Pressure
Check
Free blood pressure check is available the second
Tuesday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to
11:00 a.m.

Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. and Fridays 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 204
Exercise Classes
Exercise plays a vital role in a seniors health and
contributes to bone density, increased muscle
strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress.

Coffee with the
Mayor
Coffee with the Mayor is held the third Tuesday of
the month, where seniors can listen and chat with
the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal
interest.

Fit & Talk
Fit & Talk meets on Thursdays for easy
30-minute workouts which include line dance, chair
exercises, yoga, and more.

Gift Shop
The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand craft ed items,
blankets, and other unique items made by senior
crafters. The Gift Shop is located in the Community
Center.

Referral Intakes
The Information & Referral program assists seniors
finding resources that address their issues or living
concerns.

Karaoke
Karaoke meets the second and fourth Tuesday of
each month. It is a popular program where seniors
can sing their favorite songs in different languages.

Legal Assistance
The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles
Organization is available once a month to provide
seniors with legal insight.

Mahjong
Mahjong meets Fridays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of
Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles
that are drawn and discarded until a player secures
a winning hand.

Monday Dance
Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth
Monday of each month. Seniors are able to show
off their dancing skills and meet new dancers. Live
bands play a variety of music to dance to.

Bus Pass
Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month.
Bus passes can also be mailed to customers. 20
Pinochle
Pinochle meets every Monday at 9:00 a.m. It is a
card game of German origin played by two to four
people with a 48-card deck.

Program
Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost
is $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and
$4 for individuals who are 50-54 years of age.

Sing Along with
James
Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays at
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays his guitar and
has participants sing along with him.

Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from
8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with equipment provided. 646
Taste the Town
Each month participants meet at a different
restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch and socialize.
On August 21, participants had lunch at Kababstic
Mediterranean Grill.

Weekly Movie
Free movies are shown Tuesdays a 12:30 p.m.
This month’s movies were Flow, Kitbull, We Bought a
Zoo, A Dog’s Way Home, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

You’ve Got a
Friend
This program provides a weekly phone call to
individuals who live alone or need someone to
check in on them. New friends are made, and great
conversations are enjoyed.

Beach Trip
On August 14, seniors enjoyed the yearly sold-out
beach trip to Picnic Beach in Laguna. This excursion
includes transportation, pastries and coffee,
snacks, lunch, fruit, refreshments, board games,
raffle prizes and time to walk on the beach.

Bunco
On August 8, participants signed up for the popular
Bunco program. The theme was 80s Bunco and
included a light lunch, refreshments, dessert, and
prizes.

Afternoon at
the Movies
This new program invites seniors to learn all about
iconic movies. The movie topic on August 22, was
about the 1964 movie masterpiece Goldfinger
presented by film historian Theo Siegel.

Sewing
Techniques
This new class is being presented by Pasadena City
College starting August 26 through December 9,
2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. Participants will
learn about patterns, sewing techniques, and craft
projects.

Bingo
On August 29, participants enjoyed the popular
Bingo program with an Around the World theme.
Bingo includes lunch, refreshments, dessert, and
prizes.

Arcadia
Travelers Club
Support services include registering members for
trips, signing up new members, and managing the
club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is
held at the Community Center to discuss
information on trips.
