the Library also hosted a pop-up book sale during the animal
shows and sold animal themed books.
The last week of summer festivities, Children’s Services staff distributed summer surveys to
Summer at Arcadia Public Library participants and received enlightening feedback from
respondents. When asked to share a memorable experience from the program, one person
responded, “We really enjoyed the family game night, shout out to volunteers who facilitated
games between families who did not know one another.” Another respondent wrote, “We loved
doing crafts, the dinosaur puppet show is something he talks about, the volunteers helping with
crafts were great.”

ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – August 2025
HIGHLIGHTS
With the start of a new school year, staff spent the last two weeks of the month welcoming middle
and high school students into the Library. Behavioral expectations were set forth for Teen Zone,
Teen Central, and the Children’s Room with consistent conversations with students about noise
levels, the consumption of food and drink, the safe storage of bicycles, and unattended
belongings. Due to high temperatures in late August and the influx of students, staff periodically
opened the Imagination Theater to offer additional seating accommodations. Shelving Aides
helped Adult and Teen Services staff monitor Teen Zone and provide increased oversight in the
space.
Staff attended the 50th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony for
Captain Jerry Lee Broadwell at Station 105. As part of the
Ceremony, a receptacle to collect worn flags was unveiled and a
special quilt was presented to Captain Broadwell’s family. The
Library’s Children’s Room is named in honor of Jerry Broadwell
and the puppet house located in the Imagination Theater was
constructed by Fire Department personnel and their families in his
remembrance. In August the Gilb Museum Curator and Intern
installed a display in the Children’s Room featuring biographical
information about Captain Broadwell as well as fire equipment
artifacts.
The Friends of the Library hosted a pop-up book sale and a two-day Auditorium book sale. The
Friends also continue to sell on eBay, which provides a profitable revenue stream.
PROGRAMMING
The Austrian film Museum Hours was screened at this month’s
International Film Program and 31 attendees enjoyed dessert and
light refreshments during the showing. Art Spiegelman’s Maus: A
Survivor’s Tale was discussed at Bookish.
In preparation for the start of a new year of English Conversation
Class, staff hosted an informational meeting for new and returning
volunteers and shared about scheduling, class structure, and tutor
expectations. The program will begin Monday, September 15.
Teen volunteers assisted 25 patrons with their computers and

resources.
Gift baskets were distributed to kid and youth grand prize-drawing
winners who earned tickets by reading beyond 720 minutes
throughout the Summer at Arcadia Public Library reading program.
Prizes were funded by the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library.
PARTNERSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In 2023, the State of California introduced Senate Bill 321 and
updated Senate Bill 1329 calling for all students to have Student
Success Cards by third grade. These Cards give students access
to books and online resources from their public library in partnership
with local school districts. Staff have been working to implement
such a program with Arcadia Unified School District and other
schools within the City. An overview of the Student Success Card
initiative was presented at the Aracadia Unified School District PTA Council meeting in which the
School Superintendent, a School Board Member, school administrators, school principals, as well
as PTA presidents were in attendance. Staff also met with a local school principal to discuss ideas
for collaboration.
In June and July, Children’s Services staff provided weekly visits to the Recreation Department’s
Fun N’ Play sites and hosted storytimes for the children. In August, Children’s Services staff met
virtually with the Recreation Coordinator overseeing the programs to debrief about this year’s
partnership and establish goals for next year.
The Account Services Supervisor worked with the Red Cross to hold a community blood drive in
which 22 participants donated blood.
Staff attended the Arcadia Chinese Association Installation Ceremony where Elizabeth Lau was
appointed as the new President.
COLLECTIONS
Children’s Services Staff set out two book bins, donated by the Arcadia Chinese Association, and
featured a selection of book recommendations for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and school
aged students, making book browsing easier for families.
Children’s Librarian, Amanda C., thoroughly assessed and weeded the nonfiction juvenile DVD
collection to provide space for other growing collections. The Children’s Services Senior Library
Technician updated and installed new shelving signage throughout the juvenile nonfiction
collection. The signage helps younger patrons better navigate the collection and locate materials
relating to specific topics.
Adult and Teen Services staff weeded adult fiction and some areas of the nonfiction collection.
New shelving and shelf labels for the daily newspaper collection were installed to better organize
and display the materials.
TECHNOLOGY
The Information Systems Services Supervisor installed 16 new
public computers equipped with Windows 11 in the Computer
Lab.
As part of the City’s ongoing website re-design project the Library
submitted an updated departmental site map to assist with the
layout and organization of the Department’s new subsite.
A new Play Touch Table was installed in the Children’s Room and
offers eight educational games for children ages three to eight
years old to play together with friends or family members. In
tandem with installation, staff also posted guidelines to inform
families of expectations when using the table.
STAFFING
Marissa M. began working as a Shelving Aide on August 11.
Account Services Library Technician, Ann M., began cross-training once per week in Technical
Services where she helps with various clerical tasks such as denewing items as well as tagging
and encoding new materials.
Technical Services Senior Library Technician, Christina V., has begun updating “how-to”
documentation by writing out and illustrating step-by-step instructions for completing various
division tasks such as paying invoices and processing audio-visual materials. The goal is to
provide cross-training and documentation to aid when staff may be absent.
TRAININGS
Staff took part in training hosted by the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ National Center for
School Crisis and Bereavement and learned ways to support students and families following
tragedy in a community.
FACILITY
The Library’s fire panel began malfunctioning mid-month. Technicians from ATT, Post Alarm and
HCI Systems came out to troubleshoot the matter. It was determined there was an issue with HCI
equipment and a technician will again visit and assess which specific equipment needs to be
ordered.
Pest sightings were reported in parts of the Library and a pest control company visited the Library
twice within the month to treat the reported areas.

and conducted the remainder of the meeting.
REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS:
Trustee Delphey announced that she would not attend the September Library Board meeting.
Chair Chen moved to excuse Trustee Delphey from the September meeting. The motion was
seconded by Chair Pro-Tempore Carter and carried on unanimous vote:
AYES: Chair Chen, Chair Pro-Tempore Carter, Trustees Liao, Delphey and Ansell
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
Trustee Delphey encouraged all Library Board of Trustees members to become members of the
Friends of the Library. Conversation ensued regarding membership.
Chair Pro-Tempore Carter announced that she made the Pasadena Star-News by attending the
opening of Altadena Public Library’s seed library. Chair Pro-Tempore Carter spoke with Arcadia
Public Library’s Principal Librarian of Adult and Teen Services about establishing a seed library
and possible grant support from the City’s Environmental Services. Chair Pro-Tempore Carter
shared that she is willing to support a seed library program and help staff.
Trustee Liao announced that she attended the Patriotic Festival and commented on the drone
show being environmentally friendly and safe. She inquired about the cost of the drone show. City
Council Liaison Paul Cheng said that the City provided $15,000 for the drone show. The cost for
the fireworks show was about $30,000 but the City did not provide funding for this.
City Council Liaison Paul Cheng shared that he brought a motion to City Council to look at what
the City is doing for Veterans. He proposed that a Commission be created to explore what is being
done for Veterans throughout 88 other cities. One-hundred-fifty plus Veterans have been
identified in the City of Arcadia. City Council Liaison Cheng would also like to explore reinstating
the Arcadia Youth Commission as a Committee where Council members can meet with youth on
a quarterly basis. City Council Liaison Cheng also mentioned that CalPERS is not under the
control of the City and when CalPERS does not make its return, they will then go to the City and
ask for the makeup. He added that every City has concern about this.
Chair Pro-tempore Carter inquired if logistics had been considered in forming a Veterans
committee. City Council Liaison Cheng hoped that by asking Veterans to meet and inquire what
services are missing then logistics could also be figured out. Chair Pro-tempore Carter also
announced that she attended Coffee with the Mayor. She felt that Mayor Kwan did a good job
with the budget and outlined that $12,500 had been budgeted for the CERT program.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items
Director’s Update
Director Bradley extended a welcome to Trustee Ansell. She announced that the City is now using
Oracle which is a new financial system. A new server was set up on Saturday and Tech Support
spent the following Monday updating profiles for Library staff. There was also data loss which
impacted the monthly statistical report for June 2025. An updated statistical report was distributed.
Monthly Statistical Report: June 2025
The gate count, checkout, and holds numbers were higher. The number of items catalogued was
also high as the former Principal Librarian for Technical Services front loaded orders before her
retirement in late June. Reference questions remain the same.
Chair Chen inquired why the Friends of the Library donation was not reflected in the report.
Director Bradley explained that she has been waiting for staff to provide a wish list for the funds
and then she would deposit specific amounts into each account.
Trustee Liao stated that she would prefer to see the most current statistical data placed next to
the previous year so that it is easier to see and make comparison. The other Trustees agreed and
would like to try the new layout.
Monthly Report Narrative: June 2025
Chair Chen inquired about the update of the Librarian I class. Director Bradley explained that the
class has not changed in twenty years and wanted to make sure that it is updated to encompass
the scope of the current job such as staff addressing issues on the floor and that Adult and Teen
Services staff are in charge of the building on nights and weekends. The classification is with the
Union for approval. Once approved the recruitment for the position will open.
Trustee Delphey asked how the nonfiction collection is weeded and Director Bradley explained
that accuracy, timeliness, and relevance are considered. Medical resources, computer books and
encyclopedias should not be outdated. Patrons who come in with specific needs should be able
to find them.
Trustee Delphey commented on the redone staff lounge and Director Bradley acknowledged the
work that Samantha A. and Elizabeth M. did for the project.
Financial Report: June 2025
Director Bradley explained that some line items in the Financial Report have no entry as the data
is input by another City department. The gas expenditure is over by forty-two percent due to the

track.
Director Bradley acknowledged that some bills may not have come in yet and may not be reflected
in the Monthly Report.
