Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES September 4, 2025 CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:00pm PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Mazone ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Arasawa, Arzate, Curley, Laczko, Mazone, and Sherman ABSENT: None SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS – None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Vice-Chairperson Sherman reported that the Men’s Club members enjoy playing pinochle, which is not an easy game, however, it is great for the brain. Members of the Men’s Club meet every Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Center to play pinochle and some members enjoy the senior lunch. Commissioner Arzate reported he enjoyed playing at the new pickleball courts with his children at Tierra Verde park during the weekend. Commissioner Curley reported the Bargain Box has added additional hours as they did not have enough staffing in the past. Commissioner Laczko reported that Tammy Silver from Pasadena City College (PCC) stopped by the Community Center for a tour and was impressed with the facility and programs. Commissioner Laczko reported she was impressed with the number of people who signed up for the free sewing class. Commissioner Laczko reported that she distributed the Connection Newsletter to Golds Gym, Vons, Sierra Madre Center, and The Oaks Retirement Center. Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers board meeting was held on August 21, 2025, and their general meeting was held on August 22, 2025, with guest speaker, Amy Spencer. Amy is the co-founder of Los Angeles Bat Rescue. Chairperson Mazone reported on the following trips. On September 28, 2025, participants will see Fritz Coleman live at the Unassisted Residency tour followed by dinner at the Smoke House in Burbank. On October 14, 2025, participants will experience a taste of Germany at the MOCA Museum where they will explore German art, food, a German Methodist Church, bakery, and more. On October 25, 2025, participants will have lunch at Long Beach PCH Center followed by the Hello Dolly show at the Carpenter Center. The next Traveler’s meeting will be held on September 26, 2025. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Michael Cao reported the second annual health fair will take place at the Community Center on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m . Commissioner Curley asked about the City’s military banner program. Council Member Cao informed everyone that the City offers the military banner program to honor veterans. The banners are displayed throughout Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue. If anyone would like to order a banner, there is an application available on the city’s website. Applications were distributed during the meeting. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of August 7, 2025. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Sherman, seconded by Commissioner Laczko, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Arasawa, Arzate, Curley, Laczko, Mazone, and Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) Recreation Supervisor, Annie Sumioka (RS) reported on the following senior programs and events. On August 14, 2025, 108 participants enjoyed a day at Picnic Beach in Laguna. This popular program sells out each year and includes transportation, lunch, refreshments, games, raffle prizes, and time to walk on the beach. On August 21, 2025, Taste the Town participants met at Kababstic Mediterranean Grill for lunch. On August 22, 2025, the Afternoon at the Movies program was held with guest speaker and historian Theo Siegel. The movie topic was all about the making of the 1964 movie Goldfinger. On August 26, 2025, the new sewing class began with 28 participants enrolled. The class will be split into two sessions as there will be more participants than expected. On Friday, September 12, 2025, the sold out annual Western Hoedown event will be held. The event includes lunch, entertainment, and line dancing. On September 18, 2025, the Taste the Town program will meet at Blue Magpie restaurant for authentic Taiwanese fine dining. RS Sumioka reported the Tech Talk program will be available again with different topics each week starting September 12, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. There will also be staff available after the program for one-on-one assistance for those who need help with their phones. On September 25, 2025, the sold out annual Cultural Day Camp program will take place in Los Angeles, Koreatown where participants will experience South Korean food, a Korean historical museum, and the Korean Pavilion where everyone can explore the shopping center. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung (DDRCS) reported Doris Arbour will be the new representative for the Golden Senior Club. DDRCS reported on and handed out volunteer applications. Individuals who are interested in becoming a volunteer for senior services can turn in an application to the Arcadia Community Center. DDRCS Cheung reported that every quarter future items will be included on the agenda. If a commissioner would like to talk about a new idea during a meeting, the agenda item must be associated with senior programs, events, or activities. DDRCS Cheung reminded everyone to refer to their Boards and Commissions Handbook. DDRCS read the following information from the handbook. Individual members should not ask staff to commit to work that has not been budgeted for work that has not been approved by City Council in a public meeting. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room There are three pool tables available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors to play. 300 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure check is available the second Tuesday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 8 Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Fridays 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 186 Exercise Classes Exercise plays a vital role in a seniors health and contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. 1,803 Coffee with the Mayor Coffee with the Mayor is held the third Tuesday of the month, where seniors can listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 22 Fit & Talk Fit & Talk meets on Thursdays for easy 30-minute workouts which include line dance, chair exercises, yoga, and more. 36 Gift Shop The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand craft ed items, blankets, and other unique items made by senior crafters. The Gift Shop is located in the Community Center. Shoppers: 590 Revenue: $233 Information & Referral Intakes The Information & Referral program assists seniors finding resources that address their issues or living concerns. 115 Karaoke Karaoke meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. It is a popular program where seniors can sing their favorite songs in different languages. 50 Legal Assistance The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization is available once a month to provide seniors with legal insight. 4 Mahjong Mahjong meets Fridays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. 112 Monday Dance Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. Seniors are able to show off their dancing skills and meet new dancers. Live bands play a variety of music to dance to. 214 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month. Bus passes can also be mailed to customers. 20 Pinochle Pinochle meets every Monday at 9:00 a.m. It is a card game of German origin played by two to four people with a 48-card deck. 20 Senior Meals Program Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost is $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for individuals who are 50-54 years of age. Meals: 913 Average Meals: 46 Senior Seminars Free seminars are available every month on different topics. September topics were Older Adults Home Modification, L.A. Metro on the Move, USC Arcadia on Nutrition and Brain Health, Matter of Balance, and Public Works on Water Conservation Techniques. 139 Sing Along with James Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays his guitar and has participants sing along with him. 156 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with equipment provided. 292 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch and socialize. On September 18, participants met at Blue Magpie restaurant for Taiwanese food. 10 Senior Cinema Free movies are shown Tuesdays a 12:30 p.m. This month’s movies were Tortilla Soup, Coco, The Last of the Chupacabras, McFarland USA, Under the Same Moon, and Going Varsity in Mariachi. 54 You’ve Got a Friend This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who live alone or need someone to check in on them. New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed. 3 Bunco On September 5, 2025 participants signed up for the popular Bunco program. The theme was Tackle into Bunco and included a light lunch, refreshments, dessert, and prizes. 29 Sewing Techniques This new class is being presented by Pasadena City College through December 9, 2025. Participants will learn about patterns, sewing techniques, and craft projects. 33 Western Hoedown On Friday September 19, the annual Western Hoedown was held. The program includes lunch, entertainment, raffle prizes, and line dancing with DJ Pam Wagoner. 162 Senior Cultural Day Camp On September 25, participants enjoyed a guided tour to various places in Koreatown to learn about the culture followed by lunch at a Korean restaurant. 52 Senior Social Hour On September 26, seniors attended a social hour where they met new friends through interactive activities and conversation. Snacks and refreshments were provided. 15 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and managing the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held at the Community Center to discuss information on trips.
