HIGHLIGHTS
The Gilb Museum Fall Preschool Program ran from
September 12 thru November 7. The Museum hosted the
Arcadia Little League History event on October 4,
celebrating seventy years of local youth baseball through
personal stories contributed by community members and
former players. Professional baseball player Mr. Dukes
was the guest speaker.
COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS
Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on the Museum’s Collection, specifically doing
an inventory of the Arcadia Historical Society Collection. Ms. Cordano assisted Curator Ms. Stevy
Acevedo with the list of new veterans added to this year's Military Banner Program.
Intern Mr. Zackary Ostrowski continues to work on the Arcadia Woman’s Club collection, adding
additional photographs and information to the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. Mr. Ostrowski is
also in his second year in graduate school at UCLA and has said that this internship has given
him many skills he has used while in this master’s program.
Volunteer Mr. Andrew Bermudez continues to work on the Museum's collections by digitizing and
cataloging items on the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. He has cataloged 790 artifacts to date.
Volunteer Mr. Bob Levia continues to help staff at the front desk every Tuesday afternoon. He’s
been helping staff with educational kits for outreach programs. Mr. Levia has also been actively
helping prepare for the Make Your Own Snow Globe event.
Volunteer Wendy Xiang continues to help the Museum staff on the weekends with different
projects. Ms. Xiang is responsible for helping the Museum transcribe its flyers to simplified
Chinese to accommodate the Arcadia Community.
Intern Justin Mercado is supporting both the collections and education programs this fall. His work
includes assisting with digitizing collections, along with providing hands-on support for the
Preschool Program. Mr. Mercado is coming to the Museum from the Southern California
Resource Services for Independent Living (SCRS-IL) organizations.
Intern Ms. Jasmine Luo has taken an active role in leading the Fall Preschool Program, helping
develop lessons and prepare materials for young learners. She is also contributing to the early
planning stages for the Spring 2026 session.
2
City Intern Ms. Nicole Kreuzer has been working on several projects at the Museum with the
Curator. She has been working on accessioning new artifacts that have been donated to the
Museum. She has also received training, along with all staff, on how to include new Veterans in
the Museum’s Arcadia Veterans Registry kiosk.
An inventory of all items donated during this time period:
Ms. Anabel Carrillo donated 13 photographs on behalf of
the Public Works Department. These black and white
photographs include images such as the first unit of
streetlight and traffic signal on Duarte Road and Santa
Anita Avenue.
Mr. Tom Merryman donated a metal plaque from the
Chariots S.G.V. This was a car club sponsored by
Arcadia Police Department and moderated by then-
Sergeant Neal Johnson.
Ms. Mary Buttice donated City Council photographs on
behalf of the City Manager's Office. In the photos, it
includes the groundbreaking of the Police Station as well
as the groundbreaking of the Metro Gold Line.
Mr. Doug Haines donated two photographs of the
Japanese Surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri in 1945.
EXHIBITS
Staff continued to work with community members, Mr. Steven Gewecke and Mr. Tim Pawley, on
a temporary exhibit on Arcadia Little League. Personal items from both Gewecke and Pawley
were included in the exhibits, highlighting the history of Arcadia Little League over the years at
both the City Council Chambers and Museum lobby. More community members, such as past
Mayor Mr. Gary Kovacic, Mr. Tony Alvazzi, Mr. Ted Tedford, Mr. Scott Summers, Mr. Jim
Burhans, and Mr. John Kenan have loaned items to the Museum to be used in these exhibits,
which also include items from the girls softball teams. An extension of this exhibit will be done at
the Arcadia Public Library in November and December. Items will be returned in January 2026.
ADMINISTRATION
The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) met on September 4 and October 2. The Board
discussed upcoming events at the Museum, including the Make Your Own Snow Globe event.
The Museum is having its volunteers create 500 custom snowmen that are then used by FAM as
giveaways at the Snow Fest event. The next FAM meeting will take place on November 6.
Curator Acevedo had a meeting with East Los Angeles College Museum Studies Program on
building a partnership. The Museum would be the site to host three interns during the Spring 2026
3
semester. Interns will have the opportunity not only to work with collections but also construct and
install exhibits at the Museum and around the City of Arcadia.
Curator Acevedo attended the Arcadia Unified School District PTA meeting on September 2. At
the meeting, she shared what the Museum has been doing with programs and promoted the
Museum’s Educational Kits, Hidden Histories Documentary Series, and the Teacher Resource
Fair.
The Museum is beginning the application for the 2026 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship
grant to fund two paid internships: Curatorial & Exhibitions along with Education & Public
Engagement. Interns will work 40 hours a week for 10 consecutive weeks next year. The deadline
to apply is November 13.
Staff submitted a proposal, and it was accepted to present at the California Association of
Museums annual conference in March of 2026. The conference will take place in Los Angeles at
the Omni Hotel. The proposed session “The Little Museum that Could: Tiny Team, Mighty Mission”
will discuss how the small but mighty Gilb Museum is reframing what’s possible by bringing big
ideas to life on a budget, with passion, a clear mission, and strong community spirit. Attendees
will take away inspiration for reframing challenges into opportunities, boosting attendance,
expanding programs, and growing a dedicated volunteer team.
The American Alliance of Museums held the Museum Summit online on October 15 and 16. Ms.
Jenny Woods from the Seattle Art Museum reached out and asked Curator Acevedo if they could
use the Gilb Museum’s volunteer experience as a case study for their presentation “From Free
Labor to Engaged Partners: Reimagining Volunteerism for Equity, Impact, and Purpose.” They
specifically shared how the Gilb Museum works with teens and adults with special needs
volunteers daily. There were over 135 individuals in attendance during the live presentation, and
it will now be hosted on their website.
EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING
Ms. Jasmine Luo was chosen as the Education and Public
Engagement Intern for the Fall. Under the guidance of
Education Coordinator Ms. Lauren Porras, Ms. Luo helped
launch the Fall 2025 Preschool Program on September 12.
Each session follows a three-part format of free play, story
time, and a themed craft, averaging about 12 to 15
participants per week, along with their guardians. Weekly
lessons explore topics from Arcadia's history to emotional
development and seasonal celebrations.
Throughout September and October, Ms. Luo has demonstrated strong leadership in planning
and facilitating sessions, gaining valuable hands-on experience in early childhood museum
education. Intern Mercado has also supported the program, assisting with preparation and
classroom activities to enhance the overall experience. This fall featured special guests, including
members of the local fire department, and a festive Halloween dress-up session. The program
has received a strong community response and will conclude on November 7 before resuming in
February 2026.
Coordinator Porras, Education Substitute Lily Wu, and Curator Acevedo have continued to
conduct in-classroom visits to local third-grade classrooms, bringing the museum's Tongva-
English Dictionary program directly to students. Over the course of the month of October, thirteen
classes at Highland Oaks Elementary, Hugo Reid Elementary, and Camino Grove Elementary
participated in interactive lessons, which introduced students to the language and culture of the
4
Tongva people. These in-classroom programs allow the Museum to extend its educational reach
beyond its walls, providing engaging, enriching experiences that compliment students' social
studies curriculum and deepen their understanding of local indigenous history. There are 36 class
visits scheduled for the 2025-2026 school year thus far. Holly Avenue Elementary has also
reached out to schedule their annual field trip to the Museum in the Spring.
The museum hosted the Arcadia Little League History Event on Saturday, October 4, celebrating
decades of youth baseball in the community and the new exhibits around the city. The program
was emceed by Mr. Tim Pawley and featured special guest Mr. Tom Dukes, former Major League
Baseball player, who was interviewed during the event and signed baseball cards for attendees.
Approximately 55 visitors attended, enjoying historical photographs, memorabilia, and personal
stories shared by former players, coaches, and families. The event received positive feedback,
creating meaningful connections and strengthening the museum’s partnerships with local
organizations.
Curator Acevedo and Educator Lily Wu also attended the City
of Arcadia Moon Festival on Saturday, October 4, at City Hall.
The Museum’s booth, shared with the Arcadia Public Library,
maintained a steady flow of visitors throughout the event.
Staff distributed free educational kits, Moon Festival-themed
coloring sheets, and promotional materials highlighting
upcoming museum programs and events.
Staff hosted the annual Pie Day at the Museum on October 9
for all City staff to attend. There were approximately 70 city
employees that gathered to enjoy a variety of pies while
exploring the museum's new and updated exhibits.
The Architecture in Arcadia educational kits were highly popular, with all 200 distributed to the
community. The Athletes in Arcadia kits were assembled with the help of volunteers and became
available for pickup beginning October 4. Production has also begun on the final kit of 2025,
Movies in Arcadia, which is being developed and assembled with volunteer help as well.
Curator Acevedo, along with Staff member Ms. Lilly Wu, conducted two Preservation Workshops
between September and October. On September 13, the Paper Workshop took place with 7
attendees, and the Textile Workshop on October 11 with 5 attendees. The last workshop this year
will be on genealogy on December 13, conducted by Education Coordinator Porras and Intern
Kreuzer.
On October 18, the Museum launched its new program "Hidden Histories Documentary Series"
with back-to-back screenings from the "Lost LA" series. Attendees watched "Before the Dodgers,"
which explored the rich history of the communities that existed before the construction of Dodger
Stadium. This was followed by "Hiking Trailblazers," highlighting the pioneering individuals who
shaped Southern California's iconic hiking culture. Following each documentary screening,
participants engaged in themed crafts and discussions that connected to the films' content. There
was a total of three attendees. The museum is currently preparing for the next program on
November 1, which will feature the documentary "Artbound: Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead."
The Museum will be hosting its first Teacher Resource Fair on Wednesday, October 23. This will
allow new and returning teachers from Arcadia Unified School District to learn more about the
programs and opportunities available at the Museum, free of cost.
5
Staff will be participating in the Downtown Arcadia Halloween Haunting event along with the
Arcadia Public Library staff on October 24. The Museum volunteers have prepared a handful of
fun giveaways, educational kits, and promotional material for the event.
Military Banner Program applications have concluded for 2025. The final number of military
banners to be displayed along Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue is 74 with a total of 10 new
applicants this year. Vendor Amgraph has printed the banners, and they will begin installation on
October 30. They will be on display throughout the month of November in celebration of Veterans
Day on November 11.
VOLUNTEERS
On September 15, Coordinator Porras reopened volunteer applications for the fall season, with
the application period running through November 15. To date, the museum has received 8 new
volunteer applications from both teens and adults. The recruitment process remains ongoing as
the museum continues to build its volunteer team to support programs and events throughout the
season.
Volunteers have been very busy with the production of kits that will be shared with the community
in the following months. This includes all the Preservation Workshop kits and school visit goodie
bags that are given to participants who attend the programs. Volunteers are currently prepping
supplies for the next educational kit Movies in Arcadia, which will be available to the public starting
on December 6.
Volunteers are working hard preparing for December’s Make Your Own Snow Globe event on
December 6. Over 500 snow globes are being prepared for the community. In addition, volunteers
have completed 300 out of the 600 decorated snowman giveaways. Each snowman is unique to
its designer and has its own personality. These giveaways were requested by the Friends of the
Arcadia Museum who generously donated the funds for the supplies.
Coordinator Porras also has a College Application & Scholarship Workshop for the teen
volunteers on October 25. This will focus on supporting high school seniors navigating the college
admissions process. The day will consist of students working on college applications, learning
scholarship search strategies, and receiving guidance. Coordinator Porras will facilitate the
workshop, providing valuable resources to help students complete their applications. This
initiative reflects the museum's commitment to creating a supportive community where teen
volunteers not only contribute their time and energy but also receive meaningful mentorship and
resources in return.
