PUBLIC COMMENTS (5-minute time limit per person) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizen Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizen Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizen Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON 2. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items unless members of the Commission, staff, or the public request that a specific item be removed from the Consent Calendar for separate discussion and action. a. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES December 4, 2025 CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:04 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Mazone ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Arbour, Curley, Mazone, and Sherman EXCUSED: Arasawa, Laczko ABSENT: Arzate A motion was made by Vice-Chairperson Sherman seconded by Chairperson Mazone and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Arasawa and Laczko. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS – None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Arbour reported that the Golden Senior Club members enjoy celebrating holidays and birthdays, and they especially enjoy playing Bingo each week. There are currently 18 club members. Commissioner Curley reported that the Bargain Box held their annual Holiday Boutique from November 5, 2025, through November 8, 2025. The store sales went well. Vice-Chairperson Sherman reported that the Men’s Club members continue their weekly meet up at the Community Center where they enjoy playing pinochle and have lunch. Chairperson Mazone reported the Travelers Board met on November 20, 2025, for their monthly meeting and on November 21, 2025, for their general meeting. Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming day trips. On December 6, 2025, participants will visit the Banning House in Wilmington where they will tour the lavish decorated home followed by a horse - drawn carriage ride and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. On December 31, 2025, participants will bring in the New Year London time with the Moon Rays, a four-part harmony group. On January 16, 2026, participants will visit the Los Angeles Zoo, Lummis House, Autry Museum, and have lunch at the Tam O’ Shanter. On January 26, 2026, participants will attend the Grand Event Center to listen to great hits from The 5th Dimension, an American vocal group. Lunch will be included. The next board meeting will be on Thursday, December 11, 2025, and the next general meeting will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Michael Cao reported the annual tree lighting ceremony will be held on December 4, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Transit Plaza which is tonight. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of November 6, 2025. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Sherman seconded by Commissioner Curley and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Curley, Mazone, and Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: Arazawa, Arzate, Laczko ABSTAIN: Arbour 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services, Candice Cheung (DDRCS) reported on the following senior programs and events. The annual Veteran’s Day celebration was held on November 10, 2025, with 95 people. Every Veteran received a gift as a token of gratitude. On November 13, 2025, 16 senior citizens participated in a Table Tennis Tournament. Each winner received a medal, and bragging rights. On November 26, 2025, the annual Thanksgiving event was held with a traditional turkey meal served by the Arcadia Fire Department staff and a live guitar performance by Mina Boktor which everyone enjoyed. On Monday, December 8, 2025, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health is offering a free seminar on Combating the Holiday Blues. DDRCS Cheung reminded everyone to please RSVP if interested in attending the annual Senior Holiday Brunch on Friday, December 19, 2025. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Recreation and Community Services Director Sara Somogyi (RCSD) wished everyone a happy holiday season and hopes that everyone enjoys the annual cookie exchange. RCSD Somogyi reminded everyone there will not be a meeting on January 1, 2026, as the meeting date lands on a holiday and offices will be closed. The next meeting will be held on February 5, 2026. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room There are three pool tables available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors to play. 204 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure checks are available the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 6 Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Fridays 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 173 Exercise Classes Exercise plays a vital role in a senior’s health and contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. 2,043 Coffee with the Mayor Coffee with the Mayor is held on the third Tuesday of the month, seniors can listen and chat with the Mayor about City issues and topics of personal interest. 25 Fit & Talk Fit & Talk meets Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. for easy 30- minute workouts including Zumba, stretching, walking, Pilates and more. 26 Gift Shop The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand crafted items, blankets, and other unique items made by senior crafters. Shoppers: 184 Revenue: $683 Information & Referral Intakes The Information & Referral program assists seniors finding resources that address their issues or living concerns. 30 Karaoke Karaoke meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. It is a popular program where seniors can sing their favorite songs in many languages. 64 Lions Sight The Lions Sight program is offered in conjunction with the Arcadia Lions Club. Low-income seniors are screened to make necessary arrangements for their free vision care. 1 Legal Assistance A representative from the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization (NLSLA) is available each month to provide seniors with a free 30-minute consultation. Appointments are required. 4 Mahjong Mahjong meets Fridays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. 114 American Mahjong American Mahjong meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of strategy, skill, and luck. The objective is to be the first, by drawing and discarding tiles to match tiles to a specific hand from the American Mahjong card. 40 Monday Dance Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. Seniors can show off their dancing skills and meet new dancers. Live bands play a variety of music to dance to. 96 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month. Bus passes can also be mailed to customers. 17 Pinochle Pinochle meets every Monday at 9:00 a.m. It is a card game of German origin played by two to four people with a 48-card deck. 20 Senior Meals Program Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost is $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for individuals who are 50-54 years of age. Meals: 839 Average Meals: 45 Senior Seminars Free information seminars are available each month for seniors to attend. January seminar topics were Real Estate Fraud, Managing Diabetes & Blood Pressure. 96 Sing Along with James Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays his guitar and participants sing along. 136 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with equipment provided. 224 Senior Cinema Free movies are shown on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. January movies were Green Book, Dog, Around the World in 80 Days, The Way, and Life Lessons from a 7- thousand Mile Bike Ride. 34 You’ve Got a Friend This program provides a weekly phone call to individuals who live alone or need someone to check in on them. New friends are made, and great conversations are enjoyed. 3 New Years Bingo On January 9, 2026, the New Year’s Bingo was held with 72 participants in attendance. The program included a light lunch, eight rounds of Bingo, and raffle prizes. 72 Table Tennis Tournament On January 16, 2026, seniors participated in the Table Tennis Tournament. This double elimination tournament allowed participants to compete against others in fast paced games of Table Tennis. The winners received prizes, medals, and bragging rights. 13 Matter of Balance The City of Arcadia has partnered with California Healthier Living to provide a series of eight weeks for older adults on managing concerns about falls. Each week they will meet from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. 10 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch and socialize. On January 15, 2026, participants met at Ramen Yukinoya restaurant for traditional ramen. 16 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and managing the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held each month to discuss monthly trips.
