HomeMy WebLinkAboutSC Minutes: 11/06/2025SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES November 6, 2025 CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Chairperson Mazone ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Arzate, Curley, Laczko, Mazone, and Sherman EXCUSED: Arbour ABSENT: Arasawa A motion was made by Commissioner Curley seconded by Chairperson Mazone and unanimously carried to excuse Commissioners Arbour. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - None 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS- None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Laczko informed everyone that tickets for the 2025 Enchant Christmas Light Event are on sale. The event will be held at Santa Anita Park from November 21, 2025, through December 28, 2025. Commissioner Laczko reported that the Arcadia Festival of Bands will be held on November 22, 2025. Commissioner Laczko reported she will not be able to attend the next Senior Commission meeting on December 4, 2025, as she will be out of state. Commissioner Curley reported that the Bargain Box is holding their annual Holiday Boutique on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, through November 8, 2025. The store will have holiday toys, games, decorations and many more holiday items. Doors open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Commissioner Curley reported donations will continue to be accepted the week of November 10. Commissioner Curley reported the Assistance League has been able to provide clothing and school supplies to 350 children. Vice -Chairperson Sherman reported that the Men's Club members are looking to meet at a different location due to the scheduling conflict with room availability at the Arcadia Community Center. Commissioner Curley responded that if the Men's Club is interested in meeting at the Assistance League, she would need to be notified and will follow up. Chairperson Mazone reported she was impressed with the newly renovated Newcastle Park. Chairperson Mazone reported on upcoming trips. On November 6, 2025, participants will visit and tour the Gibbons Conservation Center where they have endangered primates. After the tour, participants will have lunch followed by a tour of the Guide Dogs of America facility where they will learn how guide dogs are raised and trained. On December 6, 2025, participants will enjoy an afternoon touring the lavish decorated Banning House in Wilmington. On December 31, 2025, participants will bring on the new year with entertainment and dancing by the Moon Rays musical band. Day trip and extended trip information is available in the monthly Connection Newsletter and through their website at www.arcadiatravelers.org. Commissioner Arzate reported his daughter will be performing at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center in A Christmas Carol, which will be held starting November 13, 2025. Parents were asked to sponsor the event and Commissioner Arzate purchased an advertisement to promote the Arcadia Senior programs and events. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Council Member Michael Cao reported that the City of Arcadia has signed the first of many 2028 Olympic Committee Agreements. The agreement outlines the framework for the preparation of the upcoming Santa Anita Park, where the equestrian Olympic games will be held. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice -Chairperson Sherman seconded by Commissioner Arzate and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. AYES: Arzate, Curley, Laczko, and Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: Arazawa, Arbour ABSTAIN: Mazone 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Annie Sumioka (RS) Recreation Supervisor, Annie Sumioka (RS) reported on the following senior programs and events. The Moon Festival event was held on October 3, 2025, with 111 participants. The annual event included a musical performance with a Chinese Harp called Guzheng, along with traditional Chinese food, and a mooncake for everyone to enjoy. On October 13, 2025, Sustainable Arcadia presented a vegetable planting garden seminar. On October 17, 2025, Bingo was held with an Oktoberfest theme where participants enjoyed lunch, refreshments, dessert, and fun prizes. On October 31, 2025, the Monster Mash event was held with 80 participants dressed up in their fun costumes. The event included lunch, games, goody bags, dancing, and a costume contest. On November 10, 2025, the Annual Veterans Day celebration will take place at the Arcadia Community Center. On November 13, 2025, the first Table Tennis Tournament event will be held where senior players will be able to show their skills. On November 15, 2025, a nature hike will be available for participants. The hike event includes roundtrip transportation from the Arcadia Community Center and guided by Recreation Supervisor, Gina Hernandez. On November 15, 2025, the popular Taste the Town program will take place at Menya Hanabi restaurant in Arcadia for traditional Japanese food. On November 26, 2025, the Thanksgiving Feast luncheon will be held for seniors and will include traditional Thanksgiving fixings. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director (RCSD) Recreation and Community Services Director Sara Somogyi (RCSD) reported there are many events during the holiday season including the popular Breakfast with Santa which sells out each year. RCSD Somogyi reminded everyone about the cookie exchange at the December 4, 2025, meeting. Lastly, RCSD Somogyi wished everyone a happy holiday season and reminded everyone there will not be a meeting on January 1, 2026, as it falls on a holiday. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Mazone adjourned the meeting at 4:50 p.m. to Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Recreation Conference Room, 375 Campus Drive, Arcadia.
