RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES WEDNESDAY, March 11, 2026 RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER – Commissioner Cheung called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Commissioner Goldsby ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Cheung, Goldsby, and Vanni EXCUSED: Ayala and Mediana A motion was made by Commissioner Cheung, seconded by Commissioner Vanni, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to excuse Chairperson Mediana and Vice-Chairperson Ayala. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS REPORTS FROM RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSIONERS Commissioner Cheung reported she attended the Arcadia American Little League Opening Day Ceremony at Windsor Field. Commissioner Cheung reported Recreation Supervisor (RS) Natalie Corral is a wonderful Supervisor and very engaged with the community. Commissioner Goldsby reported he attended the Opening Day Ceremony for the Pony Baseball League at Longden Field. Commissioner Goldsby reported the league mentioned a drainage issue in the dugouts. Director Recreation Community Services Department (DRCSD) Sara Somogyi informed the Commissioners the issue is being addressed. Commissioner Vanni reported he attended the Santa Anita Little League Opening Day Ceremony at Lojeski Field. Commissioner Vanni reported a spectacular turn out of players and City representatives. Commissioners Vanni praised RS Corral for her spirit, enthusiasm, and connection to the community. Commissioner Vanni stated RS Corral represents the Recreation and Community Services Department with professionalism and shows genuine care for the programs provided. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON No Report 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of January 14, 2026. It was moved by Commissioner Vanni, seconded by Commissioner Goldsby, and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve consent calendar 2.a. 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report from Public Works Services Department I. Project Updates Deputy Director Public Works Services Department (DDPWSD) Carmen Masud reported a contractor has been approved by the City Council for Wilderness Park debris removal. (DDPWSD) Masud reported weed removal will take place in Wilderness Park prior to fire season. b. Report from Recreation and Community Services Department DRCSD Somogyi thanked the Commissioners for attending the Little League and Pony Baseball Opening Day Ceremonies. DRCSD Somogyi acknowledged the compliments given to RS Corral and stated RS Corral is a good representee of the Recreation and Community Services Department. I. Monthly Report DRCSD Somogyi requested the monthly report be received and filed. The Commissioners agreed to receive and file the report without further discussion. II. Discussion of Future Park Projects DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commissioners the City Council has shown an interest in placing the renovation of Longden Field on a future agenda item list. DRCSD Somogyi informed the Commissioners the City Council could consider this in addition to or in lieu of the projects being considered by the Commission. DRCSD Somogyi went over the notes and suggestions of park projects that were discussed at the January 2026 meeting. The Commissioners continued discussions on various projects and came up with a list of three potential projects they believe will benefit the community the most. The first, a joint project with Los Angeles County, the City of Arcadia, and the Arcadia Unified School District to create a lighted walking path around the Arcadia County Park. Second, the renovation of Tierra Verde Park. The third suggestion is the renovation of Tripolis Friendship Park. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room There are three pool tables available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors to play. 156 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure checks are available on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 6 Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Fridays 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 175 Exercise Classes Exercise plays a vital role in a senior’s health and contributes to bone density, increased muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. 1,516 Fit & Talk Fit & Talk meets on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. for easy 30- minute workouts. This month participants enjoyed Line Dance, a walk to Arcadia County Park, Stretching, and Zumba. 42 Gift Shop The Gift Shop sells jewelry, hand crafted items, blankets, and other unique items made by senior crafters. Shoppers: 181 Revenue: $678 Information & Referral The program assists individuals in finding resources that address their issues or living concerns. 5 Tax Assistance Program AARP Tax Aide volunteers assist individuals with their Income Tax filing. This program is free for those who are 50 years or older with low to moderate income. 144 Karaoke Karaoke meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. It is a popular program where seniors can sing their favorite songs in many languages. 55 Legal Assistance The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles Organization (NLSLA) is available each month to provide individuals with a free consultation. 5 America Mahjong American Mahjong meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of strategy, skill, and luck. The objective is to be the first, by drawing and discarding tiles to match tiles to a specific hand from the American Mahjong card. 90 Mahjong Mahjong meets Fridays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. 104 Monday Dance Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. Seniors can dance to a variety of music played by a live band. 286 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month. Bus Passes can also be mailed to customers. 20 Pinochle Pinochle meets on Monday at 9:00 a.m. It is a card game of German origin played by two to four people with a 48-card deck. 30 Senior Meals Program Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday. The cost is $3 for individuals who are 55 years or older and $4 for individuals who are 50-54 years of age. Meals 808 Average Meals 45 Senior Cinema Free movies are shown on Tuesday’s at 12:30 p.m. March movies were Hidden Figures, The Help, Nyad, A league of their Own and Meagan Leavey. 44 Senior Seminars Seminars are available each month for seniors to attend. This month’s topics were Breathing Retraining, and Food Waste presentation by Public Works staff. 75 Sing Along with James Sing Along with James meets Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays his guitar and has participants sing along. 101 Table Tennis Table Tennis is available Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Equipment is provided. 229 Tech Talk The program offers a short presentation about technology. This month’s topics were How to Download Apps and Understanding Artificial Intelligence. 16 St Patrick’s Day Celebration On March 13, 2026, participants celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with traditional Irish food, dessert, an interactive Irish cultural dance and live music. 75 Estate Planning and Probate Clinic On March 17, 2026, attorneys met with individuals by answering questions regarding Wills & Living Trusts, Power of Attorney, and Healthcare Directives. 10 Bingo On March 20, 2026, participants filled the lobby area waiting for the doors to open for Lucky Bingo! This program includes eight games of bingo, a light lunch, dessert, and fun prizes. 73 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a different restaurant in Arcadia to have lunch and socialize. On March 19, 2026, participants had lunch at Vietnam Kitchen for traditional Vietnamese food. 12 Matter of Balance The City partnered with California Healthier Living to provide a free class for older adults on how to manage and prevent falls. The class took place from January through March. The next session begins April 7, 2026. 11 PCC History of European Art The Recreation and Community Services Department partnered with Pasadena City College for a free History of European Art class. Participants meet weekly through June 8, 2026. 20 PCC Sewing Class The Recreation and Community Services Department partnered with Pasadena City College for a free sewing class. The class meets weekly through June 9, 2026. 16 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and managing the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held each month discuss monthly trips. Meeting: 70 Passes Sold: 64 Passengers: 94 Total: 228 Cumulative total for senior services 4,533 Connection Total number of monthly newsletters distributed this month. 1,200 RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION The Recreation Services Division is responsible for providing programs and activities which meet the recreational needs of the community. A diverse selection of programs is offered for youth, adults, and families to provide the opportunity for positive recreation experiences and to promote health and wellness. A brief description and attendance totals for the programs and services is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Adult Basketball The Adult basketball league has 28 teams this season. The league takes place at the Dana Gym on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The spring league started on March 22, 2026, and will continue through June 14, 2026. 1,020 Afterschool Program The Afterschool Playground Program is a free drop-in program for youth in grades K-5. The program operates Monday through Friday from school dismissal to 4:30 p.m. The program runs from August 18, 2025, through May 29, 2026. Six elementary school playgrounds provide a variety of activities including board games, crafts, and outdoor games to keep participants safely engaged and entertained. There are three divisions, Division A for 7 th and 8th grade, Division B for 5th and 6th grade, and Division C for 3rd and 4th grade. Practices are twice a week with games played on weekends. DIV A 265 DIV B 240 DIV C 130 Total 635 Kid’s Night Out On Friday, March 13, 2026, Recreation staff hosted Kids Night Out – Roaring with the Dinosaurs theme. This month, participants enjoyed coloring dinosaur size posters and making sun catchers. For dinner, they had pizza and apple pie in a cup.
