ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT – April 2026
HIGHLIGHTS and SERVICES
In celebration of National Library Week, Children’s
Services hosted a Super Reader Party for 75
participants, complete with a superhero-themed training
academy, designing their own cape and mask,
navigating a laser maze, creating miniature Groot-
inspired plants, and building their own superhero lairs
with LEGO bricks.
April is also National Volunteer Appreciation Month in
which each section within the Library celebrated their
volunteers. The City hosted the annual Volunteer,
Commissioner, and Board Appreciation Dinner for Board and Commission members as well as
those volunteers with 100+ hours.
The Friends of the Library held their annual
general meeting and highlighted this past year’s
accomplishments. It concluded with a delightful
string band featuring the Baldy View Brass
Quintet. They played a variety of Americana
music over the ages in celebration of the
upcoming 250th America Celebration. This
month, the Friends of the Library Bookstore
proudly announced point of sale purchases
could now be made with a credit card, providing
another option for Bookstore customers.
In celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Japanese
Taiko Drumming program introduced children and their
families to a rich history and cultural significance of this
traditional Japanese art form. The children were invited on
stage for a “hands-on” experience to try drumming for
themselves!
The annual Bookmark Contest for ages 3-14 concluded with
140 entries. The theme was “Oceans of Possibilities”.

In celebration of Earth Day, the Library partnered with the City of Arcadia’s Public Works
Department to host another very successful Arcadia Goes Green event with 469 participants. The
very popular Repair Café had 94 volunteers assisting the public in repairing all sorts of items,
from jewelry to taillights, to vacuum cleaners, to crock pots, clothing, and more. There were an
assortment of vendors including Waste Management, SGVCOG, Active SGV, Food Ed, and Grow
Monrovia to share environmentally friendly programs. The Public Works Department also hosted
a mulch giveaway for residents of Arcadia. This family-friendly event featured zero-waste
initiatives, educational activities on sustainability, and giveaways designed to promote eco-friendly
practices in the community.
Account and Shelving Services is the front desk that most patrons interact with to get their
first library card, pay for a lost item, check out or return an item or ask a quick question. This
month, this section checked out 35,532 items, checked in 25,507 items, and pulled and
processed 2,135 holds. Staff answered 104 reference questions and 532 directional questions.
There was a total of 272 new library card registrations, of which 32 were new children’s cards,
and two teacher loans. There were 302 English applications, 13 Chinese applications, and 50
accounts created online. In addition, there were 24 existing account updates. The busiest day
of the week was Monday, April 27 with 1,467 visitors. There were five Auditorium rental inquiries.
Wi-Fi and Web Traffic
The library served 5,935 unique Wi-Fi users, with 7.8TB data transfers. There were 9,078 visits
to the Library Catalog, local web documents, and online database visits from 2,209 unique users.
There were 1,307 public computer users, and 1,437 print, scan, fax, and copies. The Information
Service Aides regularly helps answer questions from patrons using public computers, print, scan,
and fax stations, and this month, answered 325 reference questions and 97 directional questions.
The copy/scan/print station is very popular and oftentimes there is a line waiting so the Library
will be purchasing a second print station. It will not fax or scan, but it will be a place to quickly pick
up print jobs sent by the public computers. Hopefully this will help ease the line for those in need
of a quick print. In addition, staff processed 24 3D print jobs for the public. On April 20, the
Library’s integrated library system, Koha, was upgraded. No significant issues were reported.
Game Zone
The Library’s small gaming lab welcomed 23 students this month, providing middle school and
high school students with a safe environment to play online games with supervision.
Community Connections
Community connections provide staff an opportunity to go out into the community and meet
various groups as well as promote the Library. Staff attended the Baldwin Stocker PTA’s Annual
World Culture Night on April 24. Library staff had a Hawaii bird-themed booth and invited visitors
to create their own finger puppets of the native birds. This was a great opportunity to also share
the upcoming Summer Reading Program at the Library. Children’s staff also attended Foothill
Middle School and presented English Language Resources to 20 parents to better assist their
students.
The Teen librarian attended Arcadia High School’s PTA meeting, providing an opportunity to
share De-Stress Fest and other programming relevant for teens.
The Arcadia History Librarian attended the Arcadia Historical Society’s Derby Day annual
fundraiser. She also sits on the Arcadia Historical Society Board as secretary.
Administration staff attended the Keck USC Palliative and Hospice Care talk for clergy to
preview a similar program that will be hosted at the Library in May. It was very informative and a
great opportunity to make connections with people that volunteer with the hospital that didn’t
know about the library, its location, and services.
Iwona E., school librarian at Holly Avenue, organized a display of student artwork for Earth Day
at the Arcadia Public Library. Very creative 3D artwork is on display in the Children’s Room,
including a giant guitar and a cat, made of recyclable items.
PTA Reflections Artwork was installed this month from each of the public schools in Arcadia.
This annual event always brings a pop of color to the Library and invites families to the Library
that may have not been before. It is also an opportunity to share the many programs and
services available, including Summer Reading during the summer. AUSD District
representatives visit the Library and select featured pieces for the Superintendent Art Award.
COLLECTIONS
Collection maintenance is ongoing to maintain accurate, relevant, and popular collections as well
as spaced shelving to easily access collections. This month, Account Services shelving staff
shifted areas in the Children’s Room to provide better accessibility and flow of collections. The
juvenile new book collection was moved to the main walkway where they would have more room
and be much more visible. The Wonderbooks, Launchpads, and Playaways were moved to where
the DVDs formerly were located. The juvenile graphic novels were moved to where the new books
were formerly located. The Adult and Teen Services section weeded Adult Fiction, Teen Fiction,
Chinese Non-Fiction, and Adult Non-Fiction 700’s. Ongoing weeding of collections provides the
community with timely, accurate, and relevant collections and easier access to materials on the
shelves.
1,177 items were cataloged this month. Large shipments of orders are continuing to be received
and processed. Ann M. from Account Services is cross-training in Technical Services, assisting
with helping to process and get materials out more quickly. Librarian I Robert K. and Principal
Librarian Michele K. are working on replacing worn and damaged items in the Teen and Children’s
collections. This is something new that Technical Services has offered to assist with for both Adult
and Teen and Children’s Services as time allows, refocusing some of the bindery monies towards
replacements instead as the cost is cheaper if the item is still available for purchase. Primary
weeding and replacement of collections is still the primary responsibility of Adult/Teen and
Children’s Services. The MARC records (cataloging records) from Kanopy, CreativeBug, Press
Reader, and Linkedin were added to and discarded from the library catalog, totaling 81,267
records. This keeps the catalog accurate, even with eResource collections.
There were 14 items added to the Arcadia History collection and seven hours spent on Arcadia
history related requests. There was one obituary request.
In addition to eResource Novelist K-8 to find your next read, or the Library’s LibGuide Fiction
resources, the Children’s Room has created a new booklist “Fiction Bookfinders” for K-8th. This
will assist those coming into the Children’s Room looking for book recommendations and want a
“self-service” experience.
Digital collections continue to be very popular with 6,422 checkouts from OverDrive, also known
as Libby. Of the OverDrive checkouts, there were 2,028 audio, 1,580 books, and 1,745 magazines
of which 91 were Chinese language and 24 Spanish language items. There were 2,505 views
from Kanopy and 676 views from Hoopla, with 63 new patrons and a total of 1,868 registered for
this pay-per use service provided by the Library. There were 380 audiobook, 20 Binge Passes,
126 comics, 55 movies, 51 music, and 44 TV checkouts. The Hoopla service has a limit of $1000
per month and once that limit is reached, no more checkouts can occur. The main purpose of
Hoopla was to provide an alternative to the dying DVD and music CD media. There were 290
sessions on the Children’s Early Literacy AWE stations and 32 on ABC Mouse. Tumblebooks
continue getting used with 187 views.
PROGRAMS
English Conversation Class
Six potential new students inquired about the class and four joined this month. There are now 52
students with an average of 23 students per week. There are 10 tutors and four fill-ins, one
coordinator, and all volunteers. This program is made possible by the many volunteer tutors,
leaders, and Leo and Lisa who come in early each week to set up the class.
Pressed Flower Coaster Program
Attendees learned how to make pressed flower
coasters. Each participant was given all the
necessary supplies to make their own coaster,
which they were able to take home. All supplies
were provided by the library with 31 attendees.
International Film Program
The International Film Program screened
Antonia’s Line (Netherlands, 1995). The
audience enjoyed the film and light refreshments,
served by the library with 14 attendees.
Financial Literacy Workshop
This month we hosted a Financial Literacy Workshop from the Department of Financial
Protection and Innovation (DFPI) designed to help community members understand key
financial terms, create spending plans, and avoid financial scams with 8 attendees.
Smart Squad: Ongoing (Saturdays)
Each week Smart Squad volunteers help support the library’s digital literacy goals through
computer and mobile device assistance. Patrons continually inquire about the program and new
patrons are assisted weekly with 21 patrons taking advantage this month.
Bookish: Book Discussion
The morning book discussion group, Bookish, had lively discussion of Rejection by Tony
Tulathimutte - a collection of interconnected, satirical short stories exploring modern alienation
and identity through characters navigating rejection in the digital age with 5 attendees.
Digital Webcomic Workshop
High schoolers joined us in the Memory Lab for a workshop on
creating and publishing their own webcomics. Our Teen Librarian
led the workshop using our iPads and received assistance from our
TAG volunteers. (8 attendees)
Teen Zone had 517 teens take advantage of this after-school
program where teens gather to chat, eat, and socialize with their
friends inside the Cay Mortenson Auditorium. Teen Zone is open
after school Monday through Thursday between 3:30 and 6pm.
In anticipation of America’s 250th Anniversary, Children’s Services hosted a Dear America
Diaries Workshop with 10 participants. Children decorated their own diaries and explored
historical perspectives by writing entries that compared daily life in the past with the present.
The Kids Create: Rubik’s Cube program had 14 participants in which teen Aaron C. presented
the history of the puzzle and guided participants through solving techniques with a hands-on
presentation.
Early Literacy, Class Visits, and Outreach
There was one class visit from Dana Middle School, with 16 participants that enjoyed a garden-
themed program and created their own mini-gardens using recycled materials.
Staff visited 3rd graders at Baldwin Stocker Elementary School sharing National Library Week
and National Poetry Month through poetry to 106 students. The students created their own
poetry that they could carry in their pockets on April 30.
Storytimes (3 weeks)
There were three Seedling and Blooms storytimes and two Sprout
storytimes with a total of 415 in attendance (parents and children).
Storytimes took a break from February 23 through March 17 which
is non-traditional. Usually storytimes run from January – March
and mid-March -May. There was one English/Mandarin storytime
with 37 in attendance, which continues to grow in popularity. This
month, the focus was on farm animals. Families enjoyed exploring
new bilingual songs using the Storytime Cube.
As part of the annual Arcadia Goes Green, Children’s staff host a storytime corner. This year, 24
participants listened to stories and 27 participated in Nature Bingo.
Book Buddies, a long-standing partnership between the Arcadia Public Library and the Arcadia
Assistance League’s Assisteens, hosted two Reading Buddy sessions with 15 children being
read aloud to by their older “buddy”. This program is for elementary aged children just starting
to read and to encourage the love of reading by being read aloud to by an older student.
Ten To Try Spring Reading Program concluded on April 25. Children were challenged to
complete 10 activity badges tied to America’s 250th Celebration. There were 226 children
registered, with 38 that completed the reading program. In total, 45 books were distributed. The
program included at least one participant from each of the AUSD schools.
The Middle School Advisory Group (8) met to discuss the
Jeopardy program and on April 29 and had 11 middle school
participants compete in the trivia game. Winners earned
small prizes.
There is an eNewsletter for Middle Schoolers with 60
subscribers.
STAFF AND TRAINING
One of the department’s continuing goals has been to provide staff training and new
experiences through cross-training and to develop a more robust and highly trained team. The
Principal Children’s Librarian attended the First 5 LA Stronger Start Webinar to learn about the
resources for early learners and parents/caregivers. The Principal Adult and Teen Librarian and
Director attended a Mental Illness short course: High Risk and Low Risk Situations. The
Principal Adult and Teen Librarian also attended a training on How to Use LinkedIn Learning as
the library now offers this new service.
In Cataloging and Acquisitions, Cataloger Robert K. is cross-training in Adult and Teen Services
by weeding and replacing worn and damaged materials in the Teen Manga collection. Mariella
and Yvonne cross-train for one hour each in Children’s Services, and Amanda cross-trains in Adult
and Teen Services for one hour. Ann M. is also cross-training in Cataloging and Acquisitions. The
Library Aides continue making progress in their roles with two Aides rotating into Account Services
front desk, providing additional customer service. The goal of cross-training is to maximize
customer experiences at the Library with a more knowledgeable staff and to provide staff with
new learning experiences as well.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
The City Council approved a new indoor memorial wall to be created to honor past Arcadians
such as past Mayors, Commissioners, or residents that significantly contributed to the community.
The Library will be responsible for getting bids and proposals and getting the memorial wall
installed as well as its upkeep in the future. It will also be responsible for keeping up the QR code
that will be installed on the wall site, which will provide a list of the people featured on the wall
and additional information about each person. The request for proposal was posted with bids and
proposals were due in mid-April. Unfortunately, no bids were received.
FRIENDS, FUNDING, AND GRANTS
The Friends of the Library will be generously gifting the Library $50,000 in June. This will assist
with Summer Reading Programs, performers, services, and equipment specifically for the public.
This funding is a result of memberships, book sales in the Friends Book Store, periodic book
sales, and eBay sales, all done by Friends volunteers that dedicate their time to this meaningful
cause. The Library also received the EmPowering Access: Health, Legal, Education, and Virtual
Connection in California Libraries grant from the California State Library and Southern California
Library Cooperative (SCLC). Last month we reported we will be receiving a new ADA accessible
privacy booth, and this month, we learned unofficially, we will be receiving two new sewing
machines. “The project allows Californians new ways to access information at libraries and learn
new skills”. In addition, the Library received First Partner’s Book Club books in celebration of
America’s 250 Celebration for the Children’s Room. The California State Parks Pass provides free
parking at California State Parks and is available for free for checkout at the Library. These
programs (along with past Backpack and Telescope Library of Things) are funded in whole or part
by the State of California, administered by the California State Library to strengthen resource-
sharing and access to information, services, and opportunity with an emphasis on local
community strengths and challenges.
FACILITY AND GROUNDS
The upgraded security door panels were installed this month and all staff have been trained. This
completes our security upgrade for the Library. There is still variation in temperature within the
building. Once the cooling tower replacement is completed in early June, temperature control will
resume. The Bosendorfer piano, handmade in Vienna and shipped new to the Arcadia Public
Library in 1965 in memory of the daughter of a prominent Arcadia family, was restored with new
hammerheads and thorough cleaning and polishing.
VOLUNTEERS
The Children’s Room annual teen volunteer recruitment for summer concluded on April 4 with
interviews planned for May, with 90 applicants. The Middle School Advisory Group met and
planned their Jeopardy Game Day, which was held on April 29 with 11 participants. Adult and
Teen Services had 189 volunteer hours to assist with pulling books, assisting with library displays,
monitoring Teen Zone, working in the Community Memory Lab, and assisting patrons during
Smart Squad.

ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, April 16, 2026
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hsiuchen Chen called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m. in the Library’s
Conference Room.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Director Bradley
ROLL CALL: Chair Hsiuchen Chen, Chair Pro-Tempore Miriam Carter, Trustees Barbara Ansell,
Barbara Delphey, Connie Liao; Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley; Library
Services Manager Samantha Alba
ABSENT: None
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS:
Monthly Report, and Hospice vs. Palliative Care flyer.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: No public comment.
REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: Councilmember Fu reported that the City
is experiencing additional personnel changes, noting that Police Chief Nakamura will retire on
July 31. He wished both Chief Nakamura and Director Bradley well wishes. He also announced
the promotion of Lisa Flores to Director of Development Services and congratulated her on her
new role.
CLOSED SESSION:
The closed session concluded at 5:23pm and there was no reportable action.
REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items
Director’s Update: Director Bradley reported that administrative staff met with the City Manager
to review the Library’s preliminary operating budget. She noted that this is the first step in the
process, with a Capital Improvement meeting scheduled for the following week, followed by a
budget study session with City Council.
Monthly Statistical Report: February 2026: Director Bradley reported that some of the statistics
are lower. She noted that 17 staff members have been with the Library for less than five years. A
discussion followed regarding recommendations to increase numbers moving forward.
Monthly Report Narrative: February 2026: A revised Monthly Report was distributed to the
Board. Trustee Delphey inquired about the location of the pillar booth. Director Bradley explained
that it will be installed around the corner from Administration, in the alcove currently used for
newspapers, and is expected to be delivered by July 1. She also noted that the pillar booth is
grant-funded. Trustee Delphey commented that this month’s report included much more statistics
in the narrative. Director Bradley explained that her intent was to highlight everything that staff
does, including areas that are not always visible or shared, such as library card registrations,
auditorium rentals, and Wi-Fi usage. Chair Chen asked about Hoopla, how it works, and whether
usage has maxed out. Director Bradley explained that Hoopla is a pay-per-use service and has
reached its budgeted amount due to its ease of use and popularity. She added that, over time,
Hoopla will serve as the replacement for DVDs and CDs. Chair Chen asked if we would be turning
off the access for e-books and audio books on Hoopla. Director Bradley clarified that it will not be
turned off but instead usage limits may be adjusted. Chair Chen also inquired whether the
memorial wall project would be coming out of the Library’s budget. Director Bradley clarified that
the project is funded by City Council and not the Library’s budget. She noted that no bids were
received for the project, and it will need to go back out to bid. Trustee Ansell asked about the
location of the memorial wall. Director Bradley explained that it will be installed at the City Council
Chambers and will include a QR code, which will be overseen by the Library.
Financial Report: February 2026: Director Bradley clarified that the negative amount shown
under Bibliographic Utilities represents an encumbered amount, meaning that the funds are not
fully spent yet.
Staff Update: Director Bradley reported that the manager candidate has completed the live-scan
process and is scheduled for a physical on April 23 and should start in late May.
Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley reported that the Museum’s Created Equal
exhibit will be on display until April 17 and encouraged Board members to visit. She also noted
an upcoming Preservation Workshop on photography scheduled for May 9, followed by an
Advanced Photography and Digitization Workshop on May 18 at 10 a.m. Additionally, Director
Bradley shared that the Pasadena Showcase House is here in Arcadia, which is the Clara Baldwin
Stocker house, and invited Board members to attend.
Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: April 2026: One Book, One Coast book
discussion is scheduled for May 9. Other upcoming programs include Felt Quilting on May 7 and
Destress Fest for Teens on May 26.
Calendar of Activities for Children’s Services: April 2026: Director Bradley reported that the
PTA art installation will begin on April 17. She also noted that the Using AI Safely and Wisely
program for 4th through 8th grade is scheduled for May 15. Children’s Services staff are preparing
for the Summer Reading Program. A brief discussion followed regarding bilingual storytime.
Flyers/Articles/Posters/Attachments: Materials were reviewed by Board members.
