PUBLIC COMMENTS (5-minute time limit per person) Any individual wishing to speak before the Senior Citizens Commission is limited to five (5) minutes per person, unless waived by the Senior Citizens Commission. Under the Brown Act, the Senior Citizens Commission is prohibited from discussing or taking action on any item not listed on the posted agenda. The matter may automatically be referred to staff for appropriate response or action or may be placed on the agenda of a future meeting. REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSIONERS REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON 2. CONSENT CALENDAR All matters listed under the Consent Calendar are considered to be routine and can be acted on by one roll call vote. There will be no separate discussion of these items unless members of the Commission, staff, or the public request that a specific item be removed from the Consent Calendar for separate discussion and action. a. SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES MAY 7, 2026 CALL TO ORDER – Chairperson Mazone called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Chairperson Mazone ROLL CALL OF COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Arzate, Arbour, Curley, Laczko, Mazone, and Sherman EXCUSED: None ABSENT: None SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS - Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Services (DDRCS) Candice Cheung reported the correct attendance number for the PCC History of European Art class is 72 under the staff report. 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS – None REPORTS FROM SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSIONERS Chairperson Mazone reported she attended this year’s Pasadena Showcase House, the Baldwin Oaks Estate, which was once the home of Clara Baldwin Stocker, the eldest daughter of Elias “Lucky” Baldwin. Chairperson Mazone reported the guest speaker at the April 24 general meeting was Cindy Bengston, from the Pasadena Showcase House. Chairperson Mazone reported on the following trips. On May 16, participants will be attending the Angels vs Dodgers game in Anaheim. On Friday, May 29, participants will visit the Riverside National Cemetery and the March Field Air Museum. On June 20, participants will visit the 1872 ranch where Agnes White Tizard lived, the Betty Crocker’s creator. The next Arcadia Travelers Board meeting will be on May 21 and the general meeting on May 22. Commissioner Curley reported on May 3, 100 duffle bags were prepared for foster kids who are aging out. The bags included simple items such as towels, blankets, pillows, toiletries and more. Commissioner Arbour reported that the Golden Senior Club members enjoy weekly singing, exercise, birthday celebrations, and Bingo. Commissioner Arbour reported there are 17 club members. Commissioner Arbour was happy to have won a raffle prize at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Vice-Chairperson Sherman conveyed his sadness on the passing of another club member. The Men’s Club members meet every Monday at the Community Center to play pinochle. Vice-Chairperson Sherman said he would like to see more people interested in playing pinochle. Vice-Chairperson Sherman was happy to report he won a raffle prize at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Vice-Chairperson Sherman asked to be excused for the meeting of June 4, as he will be on vacation. Commissioner Laczko reported that this would be her last meeting, as she will be on vacation during the next meeting on June 4. She expressed her appreciation to the Senior Citizens Commissioners and City staff for their patience and kindness throughout her term. During her term on the Senior Citizens Commission, Commissioner Laczko recommended free classes through Pasadena City College (PCC). She successfully helped bring a sewing and history class to the Community Center and noted that they are well attended. Commissioner Laczko also formed partnerships with Vons and Gold’s Gym, enabling the Connection Newsletter to be delivered to those locations, which are now included on the monthly distribution list. In closing, Commissioner Laczko suggested that the Commission develop a mission statement and establish clearer application criteria for the Senior of the Year program. Commissioner Arzate reported June will be his last meeting as his term will end. He will not be applying again but thankful to everyone for a good experience. REPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISON Mayor Eileen Wang thanked all the Senior Citizens Commissioners for being great role models and a special thank you to Senior of the Year, Marilyn Mazone. 2. CONSENT CALENDAR a. Regular meeting minutes of April 2, 2026. Recommended Action: Approve It was moved by Vice-Chairperson Sherman and seconded by Chairperson Mazone and unanimously carried on roll call vote to approve Consent Calendar Item 2.a. with the following correction under Commissioner Arzate’s report: He also noted, respectfully, that he does not feel a photo feature with names and titles is necessary. AYES: Arzate, Arbour, Laczko, Mazone, and Sherman NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: Curley 3. REGULAR ITEMS a. Report of Recreation Supervisor Community Services (DDRCS) Cheung reported on behalf of Recreation Supervisor (RS) Annie Sumioka. Fit and Talk had 50 participants in the month of April. Each week there is a new or different exercise for participants. There were 55 individuals who had their taxes filed in April. During the lunch program there are now new daily activities. Each week includes Music Mondays, Trivia Tuesdays, Recipe Wednesdays, Throwback Thursdays, and Feel-Good Fridays. The sewing class is going well. The instructor and students are very happy with the class. b. Report of Recreation and Community Services Director DDRCS Cheung thanked everyone for attending the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in April, noting that it was a fun time for all. The City of Arcadia appreciates every volunteer and the valuable time they dedicate to the community. DDRCS Cheung also distributed flyers for the 50+ Resource Fair on May 8, the Fallen Veterans Commemoration on May 22, and America’s 250th Anniversary Celebration on July 4 at Santa Anita Park. The multitude of programs, services, and activities offered supports the healthy and independent lifestyle of the participants. A brief description with program attendance is listed below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ATTENDANCE Billiard Room The billiard room is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for individuals to play. 226 Blood Pressure Check Free blood pressure checks are available the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In partnership with USC Arcadia Hospital. 6 Bridge Bridge is available on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 223 Exercise Classes Exercise plays a vital role in health and contributes to bone density, increases muscle strength, flexibility, and can reduce stress. 1,470 Fit & Talk Fit & Talk meets Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. for easy 30-minute workouts. May’s schedule included chair Zumba, stretching, circuit training, and a walk to Arcadia County Park. 32 Gift Shop The Gift Shop sells jewelry, decorations, and many knitted items made by hand. Shoppers: 164 Revenue: $682.14 Information & Referral Intakes The program assists individuals finding resources that address their issues or living concerns. 120 Karaoke Karaoke meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. It is a popular program where participants sing songs in different languages. 76 Mahjong Mahjong meets Fridays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of Chinese origin played by four people with 144 tiles that are drawn and discarded until a player secures a winning hand. 140 American Mahjong American Mahjong meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. It is a game of strategy, skill, and luck. 72 Monday Dance Monday dance is held the first, third, and fifth Monday of each month. Seniors can dance to a variety of music played by a live band. 84 Monthly Bus Pass Dial-A-Ride bus passes are sold for $5 per month. Bus passes can also be mailed to customers. 20 Pinochle Pinochle meets Mondays at 9:00 a.m. It is a card game of German origin played by two to four people. 21 Senior Meals Program Lunch meals are provided Monday-Friday for $3 for individuals 55 or older and $4 for 50-54 years of age. Meals: 788 Average Meals: 46 Senior Seminars Free information seminars are available each month. May’s topics were Preserving Your Memory and Growing Old and Happy, What are the Odds. 68 Sing Along with James Sing Along meets Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. James plays guitar as participants sing songs from different generations. 140 Table Tennis Table Tennis is open Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Equipment is provided. 229 Senior Cinema Movies are shown Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. May movies were Minari, Always be My Maybe, Unapologetically Asian, K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Life of Pi. 40 You’ve Got a Friend This program provides phone calls to individuals who live alone or need someone to check in on them. New friends are made and great conversations are enjoyed. 2 Taste the Town Each month participants meet at a new restaurant for lunch and to socialize. On May 21, participants met at Xibei Restaurant, for a family style meal. 44 Tech Talk The program offers a short presentation about technology. May’s topics were Navigating Emails and Computer 101. 10 PCC History of European Art The Recreation and Community Services Department partnered with Pasadena City College for a free History of European Art class. Participants meet weekly through June 8, 2026. 36 PCC Sewing Class The Recreation and Community Services Department partnered with Pasadena City College for a second sewing class. The class meets weekly through June 9, 2026. 36 Matter of Balance This class is held from May 15 through July 10 and offers adults information on how to manage and prevent falls and practical solutions including home safety strategies. 60 Cinco de Mayo Celebration On May 4, seniors celebrated Cinco de Mayo with traditional Mexican food, dessert, raffles, and dancing to music by a live DJ. 138 Bingo On May 1, participants enjoyed a Great Gatsby theme bingo which included eight games of Bingo, lunch, and a chance to win a raffle prize. 70 Resource Fair On May 8, the Arcadia Community Center held the 50+ Resource Fair. There were many information booths including food assistance, homeless resources, legal services, and much more. 115 Social Hour The Senior Social Hour program was held on May 15. The program is for people to meet and socialize while playing games and enjoying a light snack and refreshments. This month’s theme was Wheel of Fortune. 17 Bunco On May 29, the Bunco program took place with a beach theme. Participants enjoyed 3 rounds of Bunco, a light lunch, dessert, and raffle prizes. 30 Arcadia Travelers Club Support services include registering members for trips, signing up new members, and managing the club’s correspondence. A monthly club meeting is held each month to discuss monthly trips.
