2025 and January 2026 ****Serials Processed procedures changed Arcadia Public Library Monthly Statistical Report Fiscal Year 2025-2026 May 2026 ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT – May 2026 HIGHLIGHTS and SERVICES In celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Children’s Services hosted “Passport to Cultures and Stories” on May 16, with 80 participants. Children engaged in a variety of interactive activities designed to promote cultural awareness and learning, including making candy sushi, solving tangram puzzles, playing AAPI Bingo, and creating soccer pendants inspired by the upcoming World Cup. Several staff members participated in the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) drill on May 27. The exercise provided valuable hands-on experience and insight into how the City operates during emergencies, as well as the role each department plays in emergency response. As designated emergency services employees, staff may be required to report to the nearest EOC during an emergency. Account Services staff remained busy throughout the month, responding to 11 Auditorium rental inquiries, coordinating four paid rentals, and registering 312 new library cardholders. In addition, the Library served as a four-day Voting Center from Saturday, May 30 through Tuesday June 2. Account Services staff coordinated after-hours staffing to support election services and ensure a smooth experience for the community. Wi-Fi and Web Traffic The library served 5,955 unique Wi-Fi users, with 7.9TB of data downloaded and uploaded. There were 9,153 visits to the Library Catalog, local web documents, and online database visits from 2,255 unique users. There were 1,324 public computer users, and 1,430 print, scan, fax, and copies. The Information Service Aides regularly helps answer questions from patrons using public computers, print, scan, and fax stations, and this month, answered 469 reference questions and 63 directional questions. In addition, staff processed 21 3-D print jobs for the public. The Library experienced a network power outage on Saturday, May 23, when a backup battery failed, disrupting most public and staff computers, and security cameras. Staff worked collaboratively to May Activity Visitors: 30,786 Holds Processed: 2,171 Physical Items Checked Out: 34,851 eBooks/Audiobooks/Magazines Downloaded/Streaming: 8,169 Programs/Attendance: 38/965 Passports Issued/Photos Issued/Questions Answered: 137/79/157 Facebook/Instagram/YouTube Followers: 1,826/2,357/237 minimize the impact on Library operations and continued providing essential services, including checkouts and returns, with minimal interruption. The issue was resolved later that afternoon, and normal operations resumed. City IT will be replacing the backup battery soon. Game Zone The Library’s small gaming lab welcomed 27 students this month, providing middle school and high school students with a safe environment to play online games with supervision. Game Zone will be offered throughout the summer and will return in the fall. Community Connections Community connections provide staff an opportunity to go out into the community and meet various groups as well as promote the Library. Staff attended Pancake Breakfast, Arcadia Historical Society Garden Event, the annual 50+ Resource Fair at the Community Center, Arcadia High School PTSA, Arcadia Council PTA Membership Awards and Installation Luncheon, English Language Development, and 19 school outreaches. COLLECTIONS Shelving management staff continue to work on several collection shifting projects throughout the Library. In Adult and Teen Services, the newspaper back issues were condensed to the most recent three months and relocated from the cabinets located in the alcove. Back issues have been moved across from the Adult Services Desk where the daily newspapers are displayed. This shift was necessary in preparation for the anticipated installation of the Pillar Booth. To accommodate the relocation of the newspaper back issues, the Arcadia High School Yearbooks were moved to the shelving near the Adult Principal Librarian’s office. Additionally, the Great Courses collection was weeded and shifted to the right from its current location, across from the Account Services Desk. This allowed space to shift the English Language Learners (ELL) collection, which was relocated to the left of the Great Courses collection. Lastly, the Memory Care Kits have been moved to the south side of the Adult Services Desk near the International Languages area. Children’s staff continues to weed the Children’s collection with a focus on biographies and Spanish-language sections. A total of 658 books were weeded this month. Additionally, staff completed and distributed updated grade-level fiction Bookfinders for Kindergarten through 8th grade. These lists serve as a quick reference for families seeking reading recommendations based on grade level, reading ability, content, and newer titles. Children’s Services has completed its end- of-year ordering of books and materials, closing out the fiscal year. As we approach the end of the fiscal year Cataloging and Acquisitions staff continue to receive large shipments of items to be catalogued and processed. This month 1,009 items were cataloged. Chinese material Cataloguer Ted resumed working this month and will continue working three days a week through June. Ted is contracted to perform original cataloging for the Library’s Chinese language collection. The MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) records from Kanopy, Creative Bug, Press Reader, and Linkedin that were added to and discarded from our library catalog this month totaled 37,277 records. There were four items added to the Arcadia History Collection and one hour spent on local history research requests. There was a slight increase this month from last month in OverDrive (Libby) usage with 6,510 checkouts. There were 814 videos played and 27,032 minutes watched on Kanopy. Hoopla had 784 views and 79 new users, with a total of 1,946 registered users for this pay-per use service provided by the Library. There were 243 sessions on the Children’s Early Literacy AWE stations and 58 on ABC Mouse. Tumblebooks increased this month with 328 views. As the fiscal year winds down, Adult and Teen Services focused on budget management and the expenditure of remaining materials budgets during the month of May. This final round of purchasing will help set staff up for a smooth final month of the fiscal year. PROGRAMS English Conversation Class English Conversation Class (ECC) concluded on Monday, May 18. Students, Tutors, and Library Administration staff attended as students celebrated their accomplishments this fiscal year. Certificates of Completion were awarded to all ECC students in attendance. A few beginner students shared a little of what they learned in the class showcasing their conversational skills. Hospice vs. Palliative Care Program The Library hosted a talk from local medical professionals where they discussed hospice and palliative care, and their key differences. The nine attendees were able to ask questions and get access to resources. Beaded Bracelet Program Attendees were able to be creative, making their own beaded bracelets. All supplies were provided by the library, with 15 attendees. International Film Program This month our International Film Program screened The Intouchables (France, 2011), a film about a wealthy quadriplegic who hires an ex-con as his caregiver, sparking an unlikely friendship that transforms both their lives. 14 attendees enjoyed the film and light refreshments were served by the library. Bookish: Book Discussion The morning book discussion group, Bookish, had lively discussion of Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte - a collection of interconnected, satirical short stories exploring modern alienation and identity through characters navigating rejection in the digital age with 5 attendees. Seed Library The Seed Library continued to be well utilized, adding 13 new members during the month and bringing the total to 161 participants. Staff distributed 50 seed packets, reflecting ongoing community interest in the program. Smart Squad: Ongoing (Saturdays) Each week Smart Squad volunteers help support the library’s digital literacy goals through computer and mobile device assistance. Patrons continually inquire about the program and new patrons are assisted weekly with 29 patrons taking advantage this month. Fun with Felt Workshop High schoolers gathered after school to let their creativity run wild in this unique program where they learned how to create folk art with felt with 18 attendees. De-Stress Fest Our most popular teen program, with 172 attendees, was back to help relieve all the stress that our high schoolers face from their final exams. Teen Librarian Claudia provided ice cream, anime, snacks, and two highly trained therapy dogs that melted away stress one belly rub at a time. Teen Zone This month there were 418 teens that took advantage of this after-school program where teens gather to chat, eat, and socialize with their friends inside the Cay Mortenson Auditorium. Teen Zone is open after school Monday through Thursday between 3:30 and 6pm. Middle School Advisory The final meeting of the school year was held on May 19, with seven members in attendance. Participants enjoyed baked goods from 85°C Bakery while reflecting on the group’s accomplishments and selecting the new MAG Leads for the upcoming school year. The meeting concluded with members playing board games and celebrating a successful year. STAFF AND TRAINING A conditional offer was extended for the Library Services Manager position after the previous candidate withdrew from the recruitment process. The selected candidate has successfully completed all pre-employment requirements and is expected to begin in late June. In addition, a conditional offer was also made to fill in a vacant Library Aide position in Account Services. The candidate is pending pre-employment clearances. Cross-training staff will be the new norm at the Library. All staff from our part-time Aides to our professional staff will have the opportunity to learn new skills throughout the organization. Cross training not only provides staff with new opportunities, but it also offers flexibility throughout the organization. Cataloging and Acquisitions Librarian Robert, continues training with Adult and Teen Services. Robert will be transitioning into working at the public desk on his own with supervision. Adult Librarian II Yvonne continues to cross-train with Children’s Services. Senior Library Technician Angelica began cross training this month with Cataloging and Acquisitions where she is assisting with book processing. Angelica is also a certified Passport Agent and assists when needed. Library Technician II Ann continues to cross-train in Cataloging and Acquisitions. She is also a certified Passport Agent, and this month began training with our Information Systems section. Library Technician I Mariella continues to cross train with Children’s Services. Part-time Aides Aimee L., David, Kenny, and Marissa are currently training at the front desk with Account Services. On May 14, management staff and Children’s Services Librarian attended Serving with a Purpose, an annual conference held at the Ontario Convention Center. This year’s conference focused on strengthening collaboration among library staff, Friends’ groups, and Boards of Trustees. On May 19, the part-time Children’s Librarian attended Ingram’s “iKids Insights: Publisher Previews Webinar Series” to learn about upcoming Fall titles for potential collection development and future purchasing. VOLUNTEERS Throughout the month, Children’s Senior Library Technician led orientation sessions for the teen summer volunteers at Arcadia Public Library, preparing them to support a variety of programs and services during the busy summer season. Adult and Teen Services had 146.5 volunteer hours working on a variety of jobs, including pulling books, assisting with library displays, monitoring Teen Zone, working in the Community Memory Lab and assisting patrons during Smart Squad. Long before his life as a columnist, he served as infantryman, then writer and combat correspondent for the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. As a 21-year-old Marine in Korea, Martinez dispatched letters, some with pen-and-ink drawings, almost daily to his bride, Joanne. His letters home capture his experiences eloquently and with depth of understanding as they express the dangers, hardships, fear, friendships, and even humor, of life at the front. In these letters, we can see a budding professional writer at work. CLOSED SESSION: The closed session concluded at 5:25pm with no reportable action. REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: Trustee Delphey reported that the bookstore continues to do well, with eBay book sales totaling $1,700 in April. She also announced that the Friends of the Library will give the Library a $50,000 donation this year. Implementation of the Square point of sale system has been completed, and all bookstore volunteers have received the necessary training. Trustee Delphey shared that the April 25 Friends of the Library General Membership Meeting was well attended and successful. The formal presentation of the Friends’ $50,000 donation will be presented at a June City Council meeting. She also noted that she attended the Clara Baldwin Stocker presentation at the Museum, which was very impressive. Trustee Ansell reported on her attendance at the conference Serving with a Purpose. One of the keynote speakers, who has experience working with the Friends of the Library, discussed the work that must be done by both the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation groups, as well as strategies for adapting to evolving library changes. Trustee Ansell noted that conference sessions included discussions on library security, the importance of annual bylaw reviews, fundraising events, and merchandising opportunities. She also shared that attendance at the conference increased this year, with 20 additional libraries in attendance. Director Bradley added that libraries throughout California attend the conference. Additionally, Trustee Ansell highlighted the growing popularity of Silent Book Clubs at some libraries These gatherings are often held at coffee shops, where participants bring their own books to read quietly or discuss their reading, which helps build out into the community. Summer Reading Program Presentations: Adult Services Librarian Melissa presented the 2026 Adult Summer Reading Program, themed Ocean of Possibilities. The program will run from June 1 through July 25. Participants may register through Beanstack and will earn one grand prize drawing ticket for every 120 minutes read. Additional tickets may be earned by attending Adult Services programs throughout the summer. There are three grand prizes consisting of two tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific, a retro CD player, and a miniature bookstore diorama. Adult summer programs include Felt Fish Keychains on June 11, Customizable Aprons on July 16, and a Walking Book Club every other Saturday at 9:15 a.m. This year Adult and Teen Services will introduce a sticker schedule which participants will receive a physical sticker when they complete weekly challenges to show their accomplishments during the summer. Teen Services Librarian Claudia presented the Teen Summer Reading Program, which will follow a similar format but will feature programs and prizes geared towards teens. Teen grand prizes consist of a Y2K aquarium lamp, a digital vlogging camera, and a Zen garden. Teens may earn additional tickets by attending programs such as the Manga-Talk on June 26, Clay Whimsi Planters on July 23, and weekly scavenger hunts. Children’s Services Principal Librarian Amy presented the Children’s Summer Reading Program and introduced a new brochure style calendar. Registration starts June 1. Participants can earn one virtual point for every 60 minutes of reading, with a maximum of 12 points by reading up to 720 minutes. Children’s prizes include items such as inflatable narwhals, plushies, light up ocean wands, etc. Prizes are based on a point system in which larger prizes are worth up to eight points. Additional prizes are available for early readers. Grand prize bundles include a beach day package, a family four pack of tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific, an art bundle, a digital camera, a gaming keyboard and mouse, a jellyfish lamp, and so much more. Amy noted that the Children’s Summer Reading Program and prizes are made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Library. Upcoming Children’s Summer Reading events include the Summer Kickoff on June 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., featuring juggler David Cousin, lawn activities, and a Hawaiian shaved ice truck. On June 22 Music with Iwalani, June 23 Roundhouse Aquarium, July 11 Bubble show, and the summer finale Library Safari on Saturday, July 25 which will include reptiles’ children can interact with. Additional programming will be offered throughout the summer such as Pajama Storytime and regularly scheduled storytimes. The Library Board thanked the staff for their informative presentations. REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items Director’s Update: No report. Monthly Statistical Report: April 2026: Chair Chen noted discrepancies in the reported totals for reference questions and circulation statistics. The Chair also inquired about Library revenue, asking whether only gifts and grants are received directly by the Library. Director Bradley confirmed and noted that Passport Services’ revenue is received by the City, but those funds support staffing costs. Chair Chen added that both the gate count and circulation numbers have increased. A discussion followed on how to promote library services and programs to the community. Monthly Report Narrative: April 2026: Director Bradley reported that the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting was well attended and featured a musical Americana performance by a quintet. She also noted that the Taiko drumming program in Children’s was also well attended. April was a big month for celebrations, highlighting National Library Week and other events. Director Bradley shared that Repair Café continues to be one of the Library’s most popular and well attended programs. Several collections have shifted throughout the Library. In the Children’s area, the new books collection has been relocated towards the entrance of the room to increase visibility and circulation. The newspaper collection has also moved to better serve library users. Director Bradley announced that the Library will be receiving sewing machines through a grant from the California State Library. The machines will be available for checkout, along with telescopes, as part of the Library’s growing Library of Things collection. Trustee Ansell noted that the Library also offers California State Park passes for checkout. Library Services Manager Alba reported that the Library has 18 passes available, which may be checked out at the Account Services Desk. Financial Report: April 2026: The Library Board reviewed the financial report, and Director Bradley noted that the Library remains on track with the budget and spending. Staff Update: Director Bradley provided an update on the Library Services Manager recruitment. The first candidate declined the offer as of last Wednesday. A conditional offer was extended to the next candidate, who is expected to begin on June 22. This position will be overseeing the Public Services division. Director Bradley announced that this would be her last Library Board meeting, as she will be on vacation in June. Her official last day will be June 30. Director Bradley expressed her appreciation to Board members, and the community. She noted that the Library will need to do a Request for Proposal (RFP) for library materials. Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: Director Bradley reported that the Museum hosted the Clara Baldwin Stocker History Talk on May 16. She invited the Board to the Fallen Veterans Commemoration on May 22 at 9:00 a.m. at the Community Center. As part of the nationwide America 250 celebration, the Community Center will be stenciling the America 250 logo at each City department. Director Bradley shared that the East Community College interns completed their internship last week. She highlighted intern CJ’s excellent presentation on fundraising strategies for the Friends of the Museum. A brief discussion followed regarding fundraising ideas for the Library. Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: June 2026: Calendar of Activities was reviewed by the Board. Flyers/Articles/Posters/Attachments: Materials were reviewed by Board members. Director Bradley announced that LinkedIn Learning is now available. Additionally, the Library’s upcoming Book Discussion will feature 1776 by David McCullough, which is scheduled Saturday, June 27.
