On June 13, the Children’s Section hosted the “Summer Reading Kickoff” event, featuring lawn games, a magnetic fishing game, water rockets demonstration by the Columbia Memorial Space Center, and a performance by Juggler David Cousin (220 attendees). An interactive submarine-themed photo station was created in the Children’s Room for the summer, encouraging families to capture memorable moments during their library visits. Adult Services also hosted a Felt Fish Keychain program on June 11 for adults (16 attendees). In celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Children’s Services hosted a Stars, Stripes, and Styles program on June 16 (27 attendees), where children decorated patriotic hats, sunglasses, and wands before showing off their creations in a festive fashion runway. On June 27, Adult and Teen Services had a special book discussion on David McCullough’s 1776 (4 attendees). Adding to the festivities in June, the Library screened 19 FIFA World Cup games in the Auditorium during available times, drawing 366 attendees. The eventful start of summer drew additional activity into the library, with 32,563 visitors (5.8% increase over May). Wi-Fi, Web Traffic, Computer Lab and Technology The library served 5,280 unique Wi-Fi users, with 8.1.8TB data transfers. There were 9,296 visits to the Library Catalog, local web documents, and online database visits from 2,236 unique users. There were 1,548 public computer uses with 1,308 print, scan, fax, and copies, with 31 3D prints processed for the public. The Library’s Game Zone had 10 students visiting in June to play video games with supervision from staff. Community Connections Outreach in June included Children’s Services visit to Camino Grove Elementary on June 1 June Activity Visitors: 32,563 Holds Processed: 2,326 Physical Items Checked Out: 37,584 eBooks/Audiobooks/Magazines Downloaded/Streaming: 8,426 Programs/Attendance: 75/2,233 Passports Issued/Photos Issued/Questions Answered: 123/69/132 Facebook/Instagram/YouTube Followers:1,833/2,398/236 (four classroom visits, 104 students), Arcadia Montessori Preschool (70 students), and Arcadia Christian Preschool (30 students). Children’s Services also supported Arcadia Recreation’s Fun N’ Play Day Camps with site visits and provided 80 books, Summer Adventure Program reading logs, and prizes to encourage summer reading to K-2nd grade students. 7th grade students from Dana Middle School also visited the Children’s Room on June 12 (12 students) and June 26 (6 students). Account Services also registered 483 new library card holders and coordinated a Blood Drive in partnership with Red Cross in the Auditorium on June 10. COLLECTIONS AND SPACES The soundproof Pillar Booth, received through a grant from the California State Library and Southern California Library Cooperative (SCLC), was received and installed in the alcove area of the Adult Section and will be designated as the “Chat Pod” to direct patrons to use for phone calls, interviews, and other private calls. Collection shifts included moving Nolo desk prep books from behind to the Adult/Teen reference desk to the circulating adult nonfiction area to improve accessibility to these materials. Children’s Services completed weeding the Spanish chapter books and biographies. The librarians completed their materials ordering for the fiscal year, and the final shipments this month kept Technical Services very busy, with 1,102 items catalogued this month. PROGRAMS Adult & Teen Programs Felt Fish Keychains Program (June 11) A Summer Reading Program for adults, participants made and took home their own felt keychains. All supplies were provided by the library (16 attendees). International Film Program (June 17) This month our International Film Program screened In the Mood for Love (Hong Kong & France, 2000). The film takes place in 1962, when two friends realize their respective partners are cheating on them and begin to fall for one another. The audience enjoyed the film and light refreshments, served by the library (32 attendees). 1776: Book Discussion (June 27) In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, we had a special book discussion of David McCullough’s 1776 - an engrossing narrative history covering the pivotal, desperate first year of the American Revolution (4 attendees). Quilted Bookmark Program (June 25) Participants learned how to design and create their own unique quilted bookmarks. All supplies were provided by the library (23 attendees). Teen Manga Book Talk & Scavenger Hunt (June 26) High schoolers received a free copy of The Summer Hikaru Died, Volume 1 by Momokuren, discussed the book and enjoyed a scavenger hunt (6 attendees). Children Programs Stars, Stripes, and Styles (June 16) In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, Children’s Services presented Stars, Stripes, and Styles, where children decorated patriotic hats, sunglasses, and wands before showing off their creations in a festive fashion runway (27 attendees). Juneteenth Storytime (June 19) Children Services presented a Juneteenth-themed storytime featuring stories, songs, and interactive activities that introduced preschoolers to the holiday in an engaging and age- appropriate way (34 attendees). Music with Iwalani (June 22) Due to poor air quality, Music with Iwalani was relocated to the Cay Mortenson Auditorium. Families enjoyed singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments alongside Iwalani and her musical puppets (66 attendees). Round House Aquarium (June 23) Educators from the Roundhouse Aquarium visited the library with live tide pool animals and presented an engaging program about the ocean ecosystem. Participants had the opportunity to explore ocean artifacts and safely touch tide pool animals (90 attendees). Ocean Art Lab (June 25) Children's Services staff hosted Ocean Art Lab, where children rotated through a variety of art stations to create ocean-themed projects using different artistic media (60 attendees). Dive into the Challenge (June 24) The Children's Room launched Dive into the Challenge, a new summer program for middle school students featuring challenges designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills (10 attendees). Little Sea Star Readers (Mondays) On Mondays, Teen Summer Volunteers partnered with children ages 6–8 years for Little Sea Star Readers, a read- aloud program designed to strengthen reading skills and build confidence. There were 3 Little Sea Star Readers sessions: June 15 (12 attendees), June 22 (6 attendees), and June 29 (12 attendees). Pajama Storytime (Alternating Mondays) The Children’s Section introduced Pajama Storytime on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. to better accommodate working families. June 15 (31 attendees), June 29 (40 attendees). STAFF Library and Museum Services Director Bradley’s official last day was June 30, 2026. Administration staff celebrated with a farewell breakfast to wish her well. Library Services Manager Alba will be Interim Library & Museum Services Director as of July 1. Two new staff joined the Library on June 22, 2026, Library Aide Mona H. and Library Services Manager Park. FRIENDS, FUNDING, AND GRANTS At the June 16 City Council meeting, the Friends of Library presented a generous $50,000 donation to the Library. Director Bradley was present to accept the donation on the Library’s behalf. VOLUNTEERS In June, volunteers served more than 976 hours supporting the Summer Reading Program, Children, Adult, and Teen Programs, assisting with pulling books, library displays, monitoring the Teen Zone, working in the Community Memory Lab, and assisting patrons. Long before his life as a columnist, he served as infantryman, then writer and combat correspondent for the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. As a 21-year-old Marine in Korea, Martinez dispatched letters, some with pen-and-ink drawings, almost daily to his bride, Joanne. His letters home capture his experiences eloquently and with depth of understanding as they express the dangers, hardships, fear, friendships, and even humor, of life at the front. In these letters, we can see a budding professional writer at work. ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, June 18, 2026 CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hsiuchen Chen called the meeting to order at 4:30pm in the Library’s Conference Room. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Pro-Tempore Miriam Carter. ROLL CALL: Chair Hsiuchen Chen; Chair Pro-Tempore Miriam Carter; Trustee Barbara Ansell; Trustee Barbara Delphey; Trustee Connie Liao; City Council Liaison David Fu; City Manager Domini Lazzaretto; Human Resources Director Anely Williams; Library Services Manager Samantha Alba; Principal Librarian Andres Garza; Office Coordinator Elizabeth Manzano ABSENT: Director of Library & Museum Services Darlene Bradley SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM STAFF REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS: PUBLIC COMMENTS: No public comment. Councilmember David Fu answered questions from the Trustees and spoke about the recent City Council meeting and the appointing of Arcadia’s new Councilmember, John Han. He also spoke about the City’s July 4 event which includes a Drone Show, and the upcoming City’s participation with the Olympics. Chair Chen asked Councilmember Fu about the appointment of the two new Library Board Members (Elizabeth Renfrew and Jeff Chang). Trustee Liao spoke about Jeff Chang’s work with the Arcadia Chinese Association. CLOSED SESSION: The closed session concluded at 4:51pm. There was no reportable action. REPORTS FROM LIBRARY TRUSTEES / LIAISONS: Chair Pro-Tempore Carter shared an example of some items she recently obtained from a seed library she recently visited. Trustee Delphey reported that the Friends of the Library presented the Library with a $50,000 donation at the last Council Meeting. Trustee Ansell asked about the Friends’ eBay book sales, and a brief discussion followed. Trustee Liao highlighted the recent collaboration event between the City and the Arcadia Chinese Association (ACA), which offered free legal assistance to the public. The Library presented a gift of flowers on behalf of Director Bradley to Chair Pro-Tempore Carter and Trustee Liao for their work on the Board. REPORTS FROM THE DIRECTOR: Announcements / Statements / Future Agenda Items Director’s Update: Library Services Manager Alba mentioned that the recent Council Meeting went to 1 a.m. At the meeting, City Council appointed two new Library Board of Trustee members, Elizabeth Renfrew and Jeff Chang. Library Services Manager Alba shared Trust Fund balances and explained how they have recently been used for audio, video and lighting updates to the Auditorium; a new public print station; new books; and public programs. Monthly Statistical Report: May 2026: Library Services Manager Alba turned the meeting over to Office Coordinator Elizabeth Manzano who presented Library statistics and explained the changes to data collection that have impacted the outcome of the statistics. The areas covered included: changes to digital circulation numbers, the impact of self-checkout outages, serial processing changes, changes to adult program statistics as they no longer include online views or virtual programs, the Smart Squad program is now counted as an individual program, Teen Zone is counted as a separate program from all other Teen programming, changes to how Children’s Services counts outreaches, and how the English Conversation Class is no longer classified under Adult Programs. Library Services Manager Alba asked the Board to consider the way the library shares its statistics and asked them to consider if there is a better way to share this information that would assist them in looking at the numbers. Office Coordinator Manzano shared issues with the Average column. Chair Chen agreed and didn’t find the Average column helpful. Chair Chen and Trustee Ansell found the year-by-year comparisons on the statistical breakdown to be helpful. Library Services Manager Alba discussed the difference between Check In and Check Out, and a terminology change on the statistics was recommended: “In House Use” will now replace “Check In” for improved legibility. Library Services Manager Alba answered a question from the Board regarding how the Library counts its outreach statistics. For the Library, an “Outreach Event” does not include City-wide events that the library participates in such as the Pancake Breakfast and the Patriotic Festival. These participations are included in the narrative, but not in the statistics under “Outreach Events”. Trustee Ansell asked what happens to discarded books and Library Services Manager Alba explained the process. Monthly Report Narrative: May 2026: Library Services Manager Alba highlighted recent children’s programs, and staff participation in the City’s recent Emergency Operation Center (EOC) Drill. She mentioned that participation in the City’s recent EOC drill was higher than ever. Trustees Delphey and Ansell asked follow-up questions about the EOC regarding its function and who leads the drills. Library Services Manager Alba talked about a recent network power outage at the Library, and how staff worked together to meet patrons’ needs despite the interruption. Additionally, she reviewed recent shelving and collection moves. For example, newspapers were weeded down to two months of back issues, and moved, while the Memory Care Kits and the English Language Learner Collection were both relocated to a new location. Chair Chen inquired about the demographics of the English Conversation Class and what languages are spoken by participants. Library Services Manager Alba discussed the conclusion of the English Conversation Class (ECC), and Trustee Ansell shared a story about a student who was happy to receive his ECC certificate. Chair Chen and Trustee Delphey commented that the Monthly Narrative Report has become more detailed than necessary and recommended that future reports offer less detailed information and fewer pages. The Board noted that a more concise report would help save staff time and provide the Board with the information needed for its review without excessive detail. Chair Chen mentioned that over time, the Monthly Report has gradually increased. She also mentioned that they appreciate the photos in the report. Financial Report: May 2026: Chair Chen inquired if Adult Services materials expenditures are on track to spend out their section budget by the end of the fiscal year. Library Services Manager Alba responded that the library is on track to expend its budget this fiscal year. Staff Update: Library Services Manager Alba announced that Steven Park will begin his role as Library Services Manager on Monday, June 22. He will oversee the Public Service Division, which consists of Adult, Teen and Children Services. Staff Reports: The Library received a $50,000 donation from the Friends of the Arcadia Public Library. The Board reviewed the approved Staff Reports for Tsai Fong, OCLC and OverDrive. Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage: The Museum recently onboarded its Summer Getty Interns and is currently accepting applications for the Military Banner Program. Additionally, a temporary City of Arcadia Diorama exhibit is currently on display at the Museum. Calendar of Activities for Adult and Teen Services: July 2026: Library Services Manager Alba shared the Adult and Teen Program Calendar with the Board. Flyers/Articles/Posters/Attachments: Board Members reviewed all flyers. Trustee Ansell shared program flyers from the Sierra Madre Library, which recently reopened. CONSENT CALENDAR a.
