The Museum hosted the 5th Annual Dino Day on August 22 with approximately 150 guests in attendance. Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns have completed their internship at the Museum. COLLECTIONS AND INTERNS Volunteers continue to help inventory, digitize, catalog, and curate the museum's collection. Volunteer Ms. Deborah Cordano continues to work on the Museum's Collection, specifically doing an inventory of the Arcadia Historical Society Collection. She has now made an inventory of seven of the 30 boxes in the collection. Volunteer Mr. Andrew Bermudez continues to work on the museum's collections by digitizing and cataloging items in the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. He has now completed the additional artifacts part of the Floretta K. Lauber Collection and is taking the time to curate and tag all the objects. Mr. Bermudez has cataloged 873 artifacts in the Museum's collection. Ms. Audrey Strople is a graduate student from Simmons College, receiving her master's in archives. She is conducting an internship at the Gilb Museum during the summer, which included learning about administrative responsibilities done by Curator Ms. Stevy Acevedo, as well as creating a mold remediation plan for the Anthony W. Wilkinson letter collection. Mr. Austin Yang is a current student from Pasadena City College pursuing his certificate in archiving. Since June, Mr. Yang has worked on cataloging, digitizing, and curating the Brummett collection, which consisted of items from Santa Anita Park and Camp Santa Anita. He cataloged 80 artifacts on the Museum’s database, CatalogIt. Intern Ms. Jasmine Magallanes currently attends the University of Santa Cruz and was awarded the Clare Wedding Student Enrichment Endowment for her internship at the Gilb Museum this summer. She has been working on the Fire and Police Department collections that were previously not accessioned on CatalogIt. Intern Justin Mercado continues at the Museum on behalf of the Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living (SCRS-IL). He completed the American Legion Post 247 Collection and is now working on the Arcadia Historical Society Collection. So far, he has cataloged 1,293 artifacts in the Museum’s collection. 2 Getty Marrow Intern Ms. Margaret Mariani inventoried, digitized, cataloged and curated the Mr. Ray Patterson collection. The collection contained items that belonged to Arcadia High School swim coach Ray Pettersen. City Intern Ms. Nicole Kreuzer has been working on several projects at the Museum with the Curator. She has been working on accessioning new artifacts donated to the Museum, conducting research for collections, and creating flyers for the Museum's 2027 events. An inventory of all items donated during this time period:  Mr. Jeff Lapides donated the Agreement and Lease of the Methodist Hospital. This was donated to the memory of Dr. William E. White.  Mr. Lee Shimmin donated the Lion Club Banner on behalf of the Arcadia Lions Club, which recently dissolved earlier this year. EXHIBITS The Museum concluded the 16th Annual Photography exhibit and the Baldwin Stocker Elementary City of Arcadia diorama on July 18. Getty Intern Ms. Margaret Mariani worked on the design and installation of the Milestones in Arcadia exhibit with Curator Acevedo. Intern Mariani created a timeline highlighting notable events in United States history for the past 250 years, as well as moments occurring in Arcadia, such as the bicentennial and centennial of the city. In connection to the Milestones in Arcadia exhibit, Intern Mariani also helped with the installation of the Moments that Made Us exhibit at Council Chambers and Ranchos of Santa Anita at upper City Hall. ADMINISTRATION The 2026 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns, who began their internships on June 16, have now finished their summer at the Museum. The Curatorial and Exhibitions intern, Ms. Margaret Mariani, cataloged artifacts on the museums database, CatalogIt, and constructed several exhibits around the City of Arcadia and at the Museum. Ms. Kejia (Viona) Huang worked on social media, the Summer Enrichment Program, and educational kits with Museum Educator Porras. The Friends of the Arcadia Museum (FAM) held its monthly board meetings on July 2 and August 6. The board discussed their Vons Credit Union fundraiser on July 24. They also discussed their Gilb 25 event taking place on Saturday, October 10. This event will invite all members to attend, while also celebrating the Gilb Museum’s 25th anniversary. FAM is currently looking for collaboration opportunities with local businesses in Arcadia, including Santa Anita Park, Mount Lowe Brewery, and The Derby. The next board meeting is scheduled for September 3. Staff planned several museum visits for the summer interns to see different types of museums, while also having the opportunity to see them behind the scenes. On July 17, staff 3 and interns went to the Nixon Library and the Homestead Museum in the City of Industry. The staff and interns also had the opportunity to visit the Los Angeles Police Museum on July 31. On August 7, Director Alba, Curator Acevedo, and Education Coordinator Porras attended the Arcadia Chinese Association installation ceremony. EDUCATION and PROGRAMMING This year’s annual Summer Enrichment Program consisted of three different topics. Educator Porras and Getty Intern Huang created lessons on History Revealed, Dino Discoveries, and Wildlife. These lessons were also led by this year's summer mascot Pico the Peacock. The Museum participated in this year’s Concerts and Movies at the Park on July 2 and 30. Educator Porras created educational kits that were distributed at the event based on the theme of the movie being shown. The first kit was Build Your Own Hockey Player, which highlighted National Hockey League player Jason Robertson who was born in Arcadia. The second kit was Build Your Own Racecar on Route 66, highlighting Route 66’s centennial this year. The Gilb Museum hosted its fifth annual Dino Day on August 22, with approximately 160 people in attendance. During the event, visitors were able to become junior paleontologists and go on an expedition to three different spots, including the discovery team, field team, and the research team. During the discovery team, guests were able to explore the museum’s exhibits. At the field team, they were able to build their own prehistoric habitat, adopt their own dinosaur, and excavate their own fossils. Lastly, guests met with real researchers in the Museum Education Center. A special performance by Dino Party also allowed guests to meet Blu, a 12-foot dinosaur at the Museum. Returning partners, such as the Alf Museum of Paleontology and the Pasadena Audubon Society, had booths sharing fossils for the public to see and touch. This year, the Arcadia Public Library was also invited to participate in the event. Girl Scout Ms. Hannah Desidero also worked on her Gold Award that day and collected artwork from community members. 4 VOLUNTEERS Museum volunteers remained active throughout the summer, supporting daily operations, educational programs, and major events including the Summer Enrichment Program and Dino Day. On August 8, the Museum hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast to recognize and thank volunteers for their contributions, with individual certificates. Teen Lead Orientation was held on August 15 and focused on leadership, communication, teamwork, and greater involvement in Museum programs. Volunteers also continue to assist with educational kit production and preparations for upcoming fall programs and events. REPORTS FROM MUSEUM COMMISSION MEMBERS/LIAISONS: Commissioner Laczko shared information about upcoming summer events in Arcadia, including the Fourth of July celebration and Concerts in the Park, as well as a recent community pet contest. She shared that she enjoyed seeing the community come together and expressed her excitement to serve on the Museum Commission. Commissioner Laczko also noted her longtime interest in museums and looks forward to becoming more involved with the Gilb Museum. REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR Interim Director Samantha Alba provided several City updates following the retirement of former Director Darlene Bradley. She also shared that the Arcadia Police Chief will be retiring. Director Alba reported that the City Council adopted the City budget and appointed John Han to fill the vacant District 3 City Council seat. She also shared information about the City’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration at Santa Anita Park, a free community event featuring a 400-drone show. Director Alba concluded by noting that the City’s annual Health Fair is scheduled for September 12. REPORT FROM THE CURATOR Museum volunteers and interns continued collections work through inventory, digitization, cataloging, and research, with Deborah Cordano progressing through the Arcadia Historical Society Collection and Andrew Bermudez reaching 852 cataloged artifacts. Intern Justin Mercado transitioned into collections work and cataloged 355 artifacts from the American Legion Post 247 Collection within his first month. New donations included historic equipment from the Arcadia Fire Department and photographs and trophies belonging to longtime Arcadia High School swim coach Ray Patterson. The Museum continued its partnership with Baldwin Stocker Elementary School through the City of Arcadia diorama project and is collaborating with First Avenue Middle School on a catalog documenting the successful Created Equal student exhibit. Curator Acevedo also installed a display honoring longtime Arcadia resident, Veteran, and former City Clerk Gene Glasco, while the Daughters of the American Revolution installed an America 250 display in the Museum lobby. Staff remained active in community engagement and professional development, including presenting at the Museum Educators of Southern California Annual Institute, attending the Arcadia Unified School District PTA Awards Luncheon, and participating in professional exchanges with other local museums and institutions. The Museum concluded its spring partnership with East Los Angeles College, with interns Karen Perez and CJ Polkinghorne presenting on their experiences, and will continue the partnership by hosting interns again in Spring 2027. The Museum also welcomed its two 2026 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns on June 16, while the Friends of the Arcadia Museum received generous donations of $6,400 from the Lions Club Foundation and $1,000 from the Arcadia Chinese Association. REPORT FROM MUSEUM EDUCATION COORDINATOR Education and public programming remained active throughout May and June, with staff participating in community outreach events and conducting ten school programs at Baldwin Stocker and Hugo Reid Elementary Schools. At the Firefighters Pancake Breakfast, the Museum distributed nearly 200 Build Your Own Firefighter educational kits, and the Lucky Baldwin & the Wild West kit was released on May 12. The Museum also partnered with AUSD student Sabrina Yip for a second year, distributing 100 good luck knot kits in recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Two Preservation Workshops were offered, focusing on photographs and audiovisual media preservation. A presentation on Clara Baldwin Stocker welcomed 30 attendees and was recorded and shared online to extend access to the program. Following an evaluation of attendance, the Reel Reflections and Hidden Histories documentary programs concluded, with staff exploring new programming concepts to better serve community interests. Volunteers supported outreach, educational kit production, and preparations for summer programming, while several new teen and adult volunteers joined the Museum. Volunteers contributed 376.5 hours from May 1 through June 21, with preparations underway for the Summer Enrichment Program, Dino Day, and expanded summer volunteer activities. CONSENT CALENDAR: a.
