SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
MiTek Z4 IS A CONTINUOUS ROD TIE-DOWN SYSTEM USED IN WOOD FRAMED SHEAR WALLS CONSISTING OF CINCH NUT (CNX OR
CNXO) DEVICES, STEEL ALL THREAD ROD (ATR), AND STEEL BEARING PLATE WASHERS (BPW). THE SYSTEM WILL RESIST SHEAR
WALL UPLIFT WHILE COMPENSATING FOR SETTLEMENT, SHRINKAGE, AND COMPRESSION LOADING BY THE CONTINUAL DOWNWARD
ACTUATION OF THE CNX DEVICES AS RECOGNIZED IN LA CITY RR 25623 AND ICC (ESR 2190) REPORTS.

2.CINCH NUT (CNX/CNXO) - SEE DETAIL 1
A.THE Z4 CINCH NUT IS A SHRINKAGE COMPENSATION DEVICE THAT CONNECTS THE WOOD FRAMING TO THE Z4 ROD TIE-DOWN
SYSTEM. WHEN THE WOOD FRAMING SHRINKS OR SETTLES, THE CINCH NUT RATCHETS DOWN THE THREADS OF THE Z4 ROD
SYSTEM TO PROVIDE PERPETUAL SHRINKAGE COMPENSATION.
B.CINCH NUT IS IN COMPLIANCE WITH IBC 2009, 2012, 2018, CBC 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 LABC 2011, 2014, 2017, 2020. TESTING OF
THE CNX/CNXO IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ICC-ES AC316. RESEARCH REPORT: COLA RR 25623, ICC-ES REPORT ESR-2190.
C.CINCH NUTS USED IN THE CONTINUOUS TIE DOWN SYSTEM ATTACH TO THE WOOD WITH (2) MiTek WS-3 SCREWS OR (2) ¼" LAG
SCREWS WITH MINIMUM THREAD INTO WOOD PENETRATION OF 1".
D.CINCH NUT (CNX) AND CINCH NUT OMEGA (CNXO) MODELS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE.
3.BEARING PLATE WASHER (BPW) - SEE DETAIL 2
A.Z4 BEARING PLATE WASHERS ARE PAINTED DIFFERENT COLORS TO VISUALLY DIFFERENTIATE LOAD CAPACITIES AND
IMPROVE INSTALLATION ACCURACY.
B.Z4 BEARING PLATE WASHERS ARE MANUFACTURED WITH STEEL MEETING ASTM A36, GB Q235, OR EQUIVALENT
SPECIFICATIONS.
C.Z4 BEARING PLATE WASHERS ARE REQUIRED TO BE INSTALLED TIGHT AGAINST THE WOOD TOP PLATE MEMBER.
4.COUPLER (CPL) NUT - SEE DETAIL 3
A.SIGHT HOLES ARE PROVIDED WITH Z4 COUPLER NUTS TO ENSURE PROPER ROD INSTALLATION.
B.CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY COUPLERS ARE THREADED HALF WAY INTO COUPLER FROM EACH SIDE.
C.REDUCING COUPLER MAY BE REQUIRED AT FOUNDATION OR FLOOR TO FLOOR CONNECTIONS.
D.REDUCING COUPLERS SHOULD HAVE THE LARGER DIAMETER ROD FULLY SEATED FIRST, BEFORE TIGHTENING THE SMALLER
DIAMETER ROD.
E.STANDARD (STD) COUPLERS CONFORM TO ASTM A-563 GRADE A, SAE GRADE 2.
F.MID STRENGTH (MS) COUPLERS CONFORM TO ASTM A-563 GRADE C OR SAE GRADE 5 AND ARE DIFFERENTIATED WITH A
SINGLE "SAW CUT" MARKING AS INDICATED IN DETAIL 3.
G.HIGH STRENGTH (HS) COUPLERS CONFORM TO ASTM A-563 GRADE DH, ASTM A194-2H, OR SAE GRADE 8 AND ARE
DIFFERENTIATED WITH A DOUBLE "SAW CUT" MARKING AS INDICATED IN DETAIL 3.
5.ALL THREAD ROD (ATR) - SEE DETAIL 4 & 6
A.Z4 USES STANDARD GRADE AND HIGH STRENGTH ALL THREAD ROD (ATR). STANDARD GRADE ROD CONFORMS WITH ASTM
A36. HIGH STRENGTH ROD CONFORMS WITH ASTM A193-B7 AND IS IDENTIFIED BY RED PAINT ON THE ENDS AND CENTER WITH
A STAMP LOCATED EITHER AT THE ENDS OR THE CENTER OF THE ROD.
B.Z4 USES UNIFORM NATIONAL COARSE (UNC) THREADS FOR THE ROD.
C.THREADED ROD INSTALLATION AT BOTTOM PLATE AND FLOOR FRAMING SHOULD USE OVERSIZE HOLES PER DETAIL 4 & 9.
HOLES IN THE FLOOR FRAMING THAT ARE NOT OVERSIZED CAN BIND AND BOW THE ROD AS THE BUILDING SETTLES.
D.MAXIMUM OUT OF PLUMB FOR ROD IS 2" FOR EVERY 100" OF FLOOR HEIGHT. (SEE DETAIL 6)
E.1ST FLOOR ROD CAN BE A LARGER DIAMETER THAN THE FOUNDATION ANCHOR AS THE DESIGN MAY BE CONTROLLED BY

CONTINUOUS ROD SYSTEM (Z4)

The following Z4 Calculations are provided along with the detail and elevation sheets as a deferred submittal to the tie-down
system specified in the construction documents. These documents have been submitted to the Engineer of Record (EOR) and
bear their shop drawing stamp as an accepted specification. For evaluation reports please refer to ICC ESR No. 2190 and/or Los
Angeles RR No. 25623.
Please review submittal package as part of your coordination with the construction documents and comment as necessary.
During your review if you should have any questions please contact MiTek Z4 Engineering or Customer Service at (951) 245-
9525. Please provide your shop drawing review stamp on the following sheets: the first page of the calculation package, the first
page of the shop drawings (Z4-01), and the first page of the tie down layout plans (TDLP-01). Keep a copy for your records.
Inform Architect of your receipt of the documents and forward to them for their use & approval.
Please review submittal package as part of your coordination
with the construction documents and comment as necessary.
(1) Electronic set of sealed calculations showing the design of the Z4 system that meets or exceeds project demand with
corresponding Z4 runtype names.
(1) Electronic set of sealed elevations & details showing parts and installation configurations, as well as placement plans
showing the locations of the Z4 runtypes where different from those originally specified on the plans. If the Z4 runtype names
are identical to the runtype names specified on the plans a placement plan is not required.
Compression loads accumulate in the wood posts from the top to the bottom level. If the EOR specifies the
compression load Z4 will include in the design.
Uplift (tension loads): wood posts push up and are resisted by the bearing plates above. The tension load specified
by the EOR is included as the basis of the Z4 Design.

This is an explanation of how MiTek Z4 Engineering designs compression posts for a bridge assembly at the terminating level of the
tie-down system.
The full height posts (see Figure 1) are designed for additional compression demand (E.G. dead loads) as well as a portion of the
overturning level tension demand. See equation (1) below.

A portion of the overturning tension demand is distributed to the full height posts based on the geometry of the post heights. This is
because of bridge posts, which are designed to resist the overturning tension which is equal to the overturning compression, do in fact
transfer a portion of the level tension to the full height posts via stich nailing. Therefore, the MiTek Z4 submittal calculations package
will show the distributed full height compression demand from equation (1) in lieu of the compression demands shown on the EOR
structural documents.
