BASED ON PROJECT LOCATION, LOCAL ACCESSIBILITY CODES MAY ALSO APPLY TO THE PROJECT. IF THERE IS A DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE FEDERAL, STATE, OR LOCAL CODE THEN THE STRICTER OF THE CODES SHALL BE ENFORCED IN THAT SITUATION. GENERAL NOTES: 1.IF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS SHEET CANNOT BE ACHIEVED FOR ANY REASON THEN THE G.C. SHOULD NOTIFY THE ARCHITECT IMMEDIATELY. 11B-302.1 General. Floor and ground surfaces shall be stable, firm, and slip resistant 11B-302.2 Carpet. Carpet or carpet tile shall be securely attached and shall have a firm cushion, pad, or backing or no cushion or pad. Carpet or carpet tile shall have a level loop, textured loop, level cut pile, or level cut/uncut pile texture. Pile height shall be ½ " max. Exposed edges of carpet shall be fastened to floor surfaces and shall have trim on the entire length of the exposed edge. Carpet edge trim shall comply with Section 11B-303. 11B-303.2 Vertical. Changes in level of ¼ " high max shall be permitted to be vertical. 11B-303.3 Beveled. Changes in level between ¼" high min and ½ " high max shall be beveled with a slope not steeper than 1:2. 11B-304.2 Floor or Ground Surfaces. Floor or ground surfaces of a turning space shall comply with Section 11B-302. Changes in level are not permitted. EXCEPTION: Slopes not steeper than 1:48 shall be permitted. 11B-304.3.1 Circular Space. The turning space shall be a space of 60" diameter min. The space shall be permitted to include knee and toe clearance complying with Section 11B-306. 11B-304.3.2 T-Shaped Space. The turning space shall be a T-shaped space within a 60" square min with arms and base 36" wide min. Each arm of the T shall be clear of obstructions 12" min. in each direction and the base shall be clear of obstructions 24" min. in each direction. The space shall be permitted to include knee and toe clearance complying with Section 11B-306 only at the end of either the base or 1 arm. 11B-305.2 Floor or Ground Surfaces. Floor or ground surfaces of a clear floor or ground space shall comply with Section 11B-306. Changes in level are not permitted. EXCEPTION: Slopes not steeper than 1:48 shall be permitted. 11B-305.3 Size. The clear floor or ground space shall be 30" min by 48" min. 11B-305.4 Knee and Toe Clearance. Unless otherwise specified, clear floor or ground space shall be permitted to include knee and toe clearance complying with Section 11B-306. 11B-305.5 Position. Unless otherwise specified, clear floor or ground space shall be positioned for either forward or parallel approach to an element. 11B-306.2 Toe Clearance. 11B-306.2.1 General. Space under an element between the finish floor or ground and 9" above the finish floor or ground shall be considered toe clearance and shall comply with Section 11B-306.2. 11B-306.2.2 Max Depth. Toe clearance shall extend 25" max under an element. 11B-306.2.3 min Required Depth. Where toe clearance is required at an element as part of a clear floor space, the toe clearance shall extend 17" min under the element. 11B-306.2.4 Additional Clearance. Space extending greater than 6" beyond the available knee clearance at 9" above the finish floor or ground shall not be considered toe clearance. 11B-306.2.5 Width. Toe clearance shall be 30" wide min. 11B-306.3 Knee Clearance. 11B-306.3.1 General. Space under an element between 9" and 27" above the finish floor or ground shall be considered knee clearance and shall comply with 306.3. 11B-306.3.2 Max Depth. Knee clearance shall extend 25" max under an element at 9" above the finish floor or ground. 11B-306.3.3 min Required Depth. Where knee clearance is required under an element as part of a clear floor space, the knee clearance shall be 11" deep min at 9" above the finish floor or ground, and 8" deep min at 27" above the finish floor or ground. EXCEPTION: At lavatories required to be accessible by Section 11B-213.3.4, the knee clearance shall be 27" high minimum above the finish floor or ground at a depth of 8" min. increasing to 29" high min. above the finish floor or ground at the front edge of a counter with a built-in lavatory or at the front edge of a wall mounted lavatory fixture. 11B-306.3.4 Clearance Reduction. Between 9" and 27" above the finish floor or ground, the knee clearance shall be permitted to reduce at a rate of 1" in depth for each 6" in height. 11B-306.3.5 Width. Knee clearance shall be 30" wide min. 11B-307.2 Protrusion Limits. Objects with leading edges more than 27" and not more than 80" above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4" max horizontally into the circulation path. 11B-307.4 Vertical Clearance. Vertical clearance shall be 80" high min. Guardrails or other barriers shall be provided where the vertical clearance is less than 80" high. The leading edge of such guardrail or barrier shall be located 27" max above the finish floor or ground. 11B-307.5 Required Clear Width. Protruding objects shall not reduce the clear width required for accessible routes. 11B-308.2.1 Unobstructed. Where a forward reach is unobstructed, the high forward reach shall be 48" max and the low forward reach shall be 15" min above the finish floor or ground. 11B-308.2.2 Obstructed High Reach. Where a high forward reach is over an obstruction, the clear floor space shall extend beneath the element for a distance not less than the required reach depth over the obstruction. The high forward reach shall be 48" max where the reach depth is 20" max. Where the reach depth exceeds 20", the high forward reach shall be 44" max and the reach depth shall be 25" max. 11B-308.3.1 Unobstructed. Where a clear floor or ground space allows a parallel approach to an element and the side reach is unobstructed, the high side reach shall be 48" side reach shall be 15" min above the finish floor or ground. 11B-308.3.2 Obstructed High Reach. Where a clear floor or ground space allows a parallel approach to an element and the high side reach is over an obstruction, the height of the obstruction shall be 34" max and the depth of the obstruction shall be 24" max. The high side reach shall be 48" max for a reach depth of 10" max. Where the reach depth exceeds 10", the high side reach shall be 46" max for a reach depth of 24" max. Floor or ground surfaces shall comply with Section 11-B302. 11B-403.3 Slope. The running slope of walking surfaces shall not be steeper than 1:20. The cross slope of walking surfaces shall not be steeper than 1:48. 11B-403.4 Changes in Level. Changes in level shall comply with 11B-303. 11B-404.2.2 Double-Leaf Doors and Gates. At least one of the active leaves of doorways with two leaves shall comply with Section 11B-404.2.3 and Section 11B-404.2.4. 11B-404.2.3 Clear Width. Door openings shall provide a clear width of 32" min. Clear openings of doorways with swinging doors shall be measured between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees. Openings more than 24" deep shall provide a clear opening of 36" min. There shall be no projections into the required clear opening width lower than 34" above the finish floor or ground. Projections into the clear opening width between 34" and 80" above the finish floor or ground shall not exceed 4". Section 11B-404.2.4 Maneuvering Clearances. min maneuvering clearances at doors and gates shall comply with 11B-404.2.4. Maneuvering clearances shall extend the full width of the doorway and the required latch side or hinge side clearance. 11B-404.2.5 Thresholds. Thresholds, if provided at doorways, shall be ½ " high max. Raised thresholds and changes in level at doorways shall comply with Section 11B-302 and Section 11B-303. 11B-404.2.6 Doors in Series and Gates in Series. The distance between two hinged or pivoted doors in series and gates in series shall be 48" min plus the width of doors or gates swinging into the space. 11B-404.2.7 Door and Gate Hardware. Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operable parts on doors and gates shall comply with Section 11B-309.4. Operable parts of such hardware shall be 34" min and 48" max above the finish floor or ground. Where sliding doors are in the fully open position, operating hardware shall be exposed and usable from both sides. 11B-404.2.8.1 Door Closers and Gate Closers. Door closers and gate closers shall be adjusted so that from an open position of 90 degrees, the time required to move the door to a position of 12 degrees from the latch is 5 seconds min. 11B-404.2.9 Door/ Gate Opening Force. Fire doors shall have a min opening force allowable by the appropriate administrative authority. Units shall have a clear floor or ground space complying with Section 11B-305 positioned for a forward approach and centered on the unit. Knee and toe clearance complying with Section 11B-306 shall be provided. 11B-602.3 Operable Parts shall comply with Section 11B-309. The flow of water shall be activated by a manually operated system that is front mounted or side mounted and located within 6" of the front edge of the fountain or an automatic electronically controlled device. 11B-602.4 Spout Height. Spout outlets shall be 36" max above the finish floor or ground. 11B-602.5 Spout Location. The spout shall be located 15" min from the vertical support and 5" max from the front edge of the unit, including bumpers. 11B-602.6 Water Flow. The spout shall provide a flow of water 4" high min and shall be located 5" max from the front of the unit. The angle of the water stream shall be measured horizontally relative to the front face of the unit. Where spouts are located less than 3" of the front of the unit, the angle of the water stream shall be 30 degrees max. Where spouts are located between 3" and 5" max from the front of the unit, the angle of the water stream shall be 15 degrees max. 11B-602.7 Drinking Fountains for Standing Persons. Spout outlets of drinking fountains for standing persons shall be 38" min and 43" max above the finish floor or ground. 11B-602.8 Depth. Wall-and post-mounted cantilevered drinking fountains shall be 18" min. and 19" max. in depth. 11b-602.9 Pedestrian Protection. All drinking fountains shall either be located completely within alcoves, positioned completely between wing walls, or otherwise positioned so as not to encroach into pedestrian ways. The protected area within which a drinking fountain is located shall be 32" wide min. and 18" deep min.,and shall comply with Section 11B-305.7. When used, wing walls or barriers shall project horizontally at least as far as the drinking fountain and to within 6 inches vertically from the floor or ground surface. 11B-604.2 Location. The water closet shall be positioned with a wall or partition to the rear and to one side. The centerline of the water closet shall be 16" min to 18" max from the side wall. Water closets shall be arranged for a left-hand or right-hand approach. 11B-604.3.1 Size. Clearance around a water closet shall be 60" min measured perpendicular from the side wall and 56" min measured perpendicular from the rear wall. 11B-604.3.2 Overlap. The required clearance around the water closet shall be permitted to overlap the water closet, associated grab bars, dispensers, sanitary napkin disposal units, coat hooks, shelves, accessible routes, clear floor space and clearances required at other fixtures, and the turning space. No other fixtures or obstructions shall be located within the required water closet clearance. 11B-604.4 Seats. The seat height of a water closet above the finish floor shall be 17" min and 19" max measured to the top of the seat. Seats shall not be sprung to return to a lifted position. 11B-604.5.1 Side Wall. The side wall grab bar shall be 42" long min, located 12" max from the rear wall and extending 54" min from the rear wall. 11B-604.5.2 Rear Wall. The rear wall grab bar shall be 36" long min and extend from the centerline of the water closet 12" min on one side and 24" min on the other side. 11B-604.6 Flush Controls. Flush controls shall be hand operated or automatic. Hand operated flush controls shall comply with 309. Flush controls shall be located on the open side of the water closet 11B-604.7 Dispensers. Toilet paper dispensers shall comply with 309.4 and shall be 7" min and 9" max in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 15" min and 48" max above the finish floor and shall not be located behind grab bars. Mirrors located above lavatories or countertops shall be installed with the bottom edge of the reflecting surface 40" max above the finish floor or ground. Mirrors not located above lavatories or countertops shall be installed with the bottom edge of the reflecting surface 35" max above the finish floor or ground. 11B-606.6 Adjacent side wall or partition. EXIT SIGN EXIT ROUTE SIGN C/L 11B-609.2.1 Circular Cross Section. Grab bars with circular cross sections shall have an outside diameter of 1¼" min and 2" max. 11B-609.3 Spacing. The space between the wall and the grab bar shall be 1½". The space between the grab bar and projecting objects below and at the ends shall be 1½ " min. The space between the grab bar and projecting objects above shall be 12" min. 11B-609.4 Position of Grab Bars. Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position, 33" min and 36" max above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface. 11B-609.5 Surface Hazards. Grab bars and any wall or other surfaces adjacent to grab bars shall be free of sharp or abrasive elements and shall have rounded edges. 11B-609.6 Fittings. Grab bars shall not rotate within their fittings. 11B-609.7 Installation. Grab bars shall be installed in any manner that provides a gripping surface at the specified locations and that does not obstruct the required clear floor space. 11B-609.8 Structural Strength. Allowable stresses shall not be exceeded for materials used when a vertical or horizontal force of 250 pounds is applied at any point on the grab bar, fastener, mounting device, or supporting structure. 11B-703.1 General. Signs shall comply with Section 11B-703. Where both visual and tactile characters are required, either one sign with both visual and tactile characters, or two separate signs, one with visual, and one with tactile characters, shall be provided. 11B-703.2 Raised Characters. Raised characters shall comply with Section 11B-703.2 and shall be duplicated in braille complying with Section 11B-703.3. Raised characters shall be installed in accordance with Section 11B-703.4. 11B-703.2.1 Depth. Raised characters shall be 1/32" min above their background. 11B-703.2.2 Case. Characters shall be uppercase. 11B-703.2.3 Style. Characters shall be sans serif. Characters shall not be italic, oblique, script, highly decorative, or of other unusual forms. 11B-703.2.4 Character Proportions. Characters shall be selected from fonts where the width of the uppercase letter "O" is 60 percent min and 110 percent max of the height of the uppercase letter "I". 11B-703.2.5 Character Height. Character height measured vertically from the baseline of the character shall be 5/8" min and 2" max based on the height of the uppercase letter "I". 11B-703.2.6 Stroke Thickness. Stroke thickness of the uppercase letter "I" shall be 15 percent max of the height of the character. 11B-703.2.7 Character Spacing. Character spacing shall be measured between the two closest points of adjacent raised characters within a message, excluding word spaces. Where characters have rectangular cross sections, spacing between individual raised characters shall be 1/8" min and 4 times the raised character stroke width max. Where characters have other cross sections, spacing between individual raised characters shall be 1/8 inch min and 4 times the raised character stroke width max at the base of the cross sections, and 1/8" min and 4 times the raised character stroke width max at the top of the cross sections. Characters shall be separated from raised borders and decorative elements 3/8" min. 11B-703.2.8 Line Spacing. Spacing between the baselines of separate lines of raised characters within a message shall be 135 percent min and 170 percent max of the raised character height. 11B-703.2.9 Format. Text shall be in a horizontal format. 11B-703.3 Braille. Braille shall be contracted (Grade 2) and shall comply with Section 11B-703.3 and Section 11B-703.4. 11B-703.3.1 Dimensions and Capitalization. Braille dots shall have a domed or rounded shape and shall comply with Table Section 11B-703.3.1. The indication of an uppercase letter or letters shall only be used before the first word of sentences, proper nouns and names, individual letters of the alphabet, initials, and acronyms. 11B-703.3.2 Position. Braille shall be positioned below the corresponding text. If text is multi-lined, braille shall be placed below the entire text. Braille shall be separated 3/8" min from any other tactile characters and 3/8" min from raised borders and decorative elements. 11B-703.4 Installation Height and Location. Signs with tactile characters shall comply with Section 11B-703.4. 11B-703.4.1 Height Above Finish Floor or Ground. Tactile characters on signs shall be located 48" min above the finish floor or ground surface, measured from the baseline of the lowest Braille cells and 60" max above the finish floor or ground surface, measured from the baseline of the highest line of raised characters. 11B 703.4.2 Location. Where a tactile sign is provided at a door, the sign shall be located alongside the door at the latch side. Where a tactile sign is provided at the double doors with one active leaf, the sign shall be located on the inactive leaf. Where a tactile sign is provided at double doors with two active leafs, the sign shall be located to the right of the right hand door. Where there is no wall space at the latch side of a single door or at the right side of double doors, signs shall be located in the nearest adjacent wall. Signs containing tactile characters shall be located so that a clear floor space of 18 the closed position and 45 degree open position. Where provided, signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces shall be located at the entrance to, and outside of the room or space. Where provided, signs identifying exits shall be located at the exit door when approached in the direction of egress travel. EXCEPTION: In alterations where sign installation locations identified in Section 11B-703.4.2 are obstructed or otherwise unavailable for sign installation, signs with tactile characters shall be permitted on the push side of doors with closers and without hold-open devices. 11B-703.5 Visual Characters. Visual characters shall comply with Section 11B-703.5. EXCEPTION: Where visual characters comply with Section 11B-703.2 and are accompanied by braille complying with Section 11B-703.3, they shall not be required to comply with Section 11B-703.5.2 through Section 11B-703.5.9. 11B-703.5.1 Finish and Contrast. Characters and their background shall have a non-glare finish. Characters shall contrast with their background with either light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. 11B-703.5.2 Case. Characters shall be uppercase or lowercase or a combination of both. 11B-703.5.3 Style. Characters shall be conventional in form. Characters shall not be italic, oblique, script, highly decorative, or of other unusual forms. 11B-703.5.4 Character Proportions. Characters shall be selected from fonts where the width of the uppercase letter "O" is 55 percent min and 110 percent max of the height of the uppercase letter "I". 11B-703.5.5 Character Height. min character height shall comply with Table 11B-703.5.5. Viewing distance shall be measured as the horizontal distance between the character and an obstruction preventing further approach towards the sign. Character height shall be based on the uppercase letter "I". EXCEPTION: Where provided, floor plans providing emergency procedures information in accordance with Title 19 shall not be required to comply with Section 11B-703.5.5. 11B-703.5.6 Height From Finish Floor or Ground. Visual characters shall be 40" min above the finish floor or ground. 11B-703.5.7 Stroke Thickness. Stroke thickness of the uppercase letter "I" shall be 10 percent min and 30 percent max of the height of the character. 11B-703.5.8 Character Spacing. Character spacing shall be measured between the two closest points of adjacent characters, excluding word spaces. Spacing between individual characters shall be 10 percent min and 35 percent max of character height. 11B-703.5.9 Line Spacing. Spacing between the baselines of separate lines of characters within a message shall be 135 percent min and 170 percent max of the character height. 11B-703.5.10 Format. Text shall be in a horizontal format. 11B-703.6 Pictograms. Pictograms shall comply with Section 11B-703.6. 11B-703.6.1 Pictogram Field. Pictograms shall have a field height of 6" min. Symbols of accessibility shall contrast with their background with either a light symbol on a dark background or a dark symbol on a light background. 11B-703.7.2.6.1 Men's Toilet and Bathing Facilities. A triangle symbol shall be located at entrances to men's toilet and bathing facilities. The triangle symbol shall be an equilateral triangle 1/4" thick with edges 12" long and vertex pointing upward. The color of the triangle shall contrast with the color of the door or surface on which the triangle symbol is mounted, either light on a dark background or dark on a light background. 11B-703.7.2.6.2 Women's Toilet and Bathing Facility. A circle symbol shall be located at entrances to women's toilet and bathing facilities. The circle symbol shall be 1/4" thick and 12" in diameter. The color of the circle symbol shall contrast with the color of the door or surface on which the circle symbol is mounted, either light on a dark background or dark on a light background. 11B-703.7.2.6.3 Unisex Toilet and Bathing Facilities. A combined circle and triangle symbol shall be located at entrances to unisex toilet and bathing facilities. The combined circle and triangle symbol shall consist of a circle symbol 1/4" thick and 12" in diameter with a 1/4" thick equilateral triangle symbol superimposed on and geometrically inscribed within the 12" diameter of the circle symbol. The verticies of the triangle symbol shall be located 1/4" max. from the edge of the circle symbol with a vertex pointing upward.
